Tamarind Barbados

Tamarind reopened on 8 September 2026 at Paynes Bay, on the west coast of Barbados. The hotel many Canadian travellers knew as Tamarind Cove by Elegant Hotels is now called Tamarind, Barbados, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort. Marriott acquired the Elegant Hotels collection and rebranded all seven of its Barbadian properties ; Tamarind is the last of the group to come back online after a full renovation.

Here is what we know about the new product, what the brand promises, and the two or three things worth confirming before you lock in your dates.

From Elegant Hotels to Autograph Collection : what changed

The full name is long, and it says exactly what you need to know. Tamarind, Barbados, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort : within Marriott, the Autograph brand gathers hotels with character that keep their own personality instead of being poured into a common mould. The All-Inclusive tag confirms the all-in formula has been kept, as it was under Elegant Hotels.

Marriott ran the same operation on six other properties on the island. Colony Club became a Luxury Collection Resort, though on a European plan rather than all-inclusive. Crystal Cove and Turtle Beach moved to Tribute Portfolio All-Inclusive. The House and Waves joined the Autograph Collection alongside Tamarind. If a travel site still offers you a "Tamarind by Elegant Hotels", it is working from old data.

One honest point of caution : the renovated product has no traveller reviews at all. Tamarind's TripAdvisor page shows 4.4 out of 5 across roughly 1,700 reviews, but those reviews stop in spring 2024, before the closure. They describe the previous hotel. To date, nobody has yet written about a night in the new rooms.

Where Tamarind is and how to get there

The hotel sits at 1 Paynes Bay, in the parish of Saint James, on the west coast. This is the Caribbean side of the island, where the sea stays calm and sunsets fall in front of the hotel rather than behind it.

Allow roughly 23 km from Grantley Adams International Airport, or 23 to 26 minutes of driving depending on traffic. Bridgetown and its cruise port lie about 9 km to the south, and Holetown, with its shops and roadside restaurants, is a few minutes north.

On the air side, good news for Quebec travellers : a direct Montreal to Bridgetown service starts on 13 December 2026, twice weekly through the winter season. Outside those departures, plan on a connection, usually in Toronto or a United States hub. Your advisor will tell you what is available for your exact dates.

The rooms after the renovation

The reopening announcement lists 111 fully rebuilt rooms and suites. TripAdvisor still shows 101 : that is the pre-renovation figure, and the listing has simply not been updated.

The renovation touched every category, from garden-view rooms to beachfront suites. The original architecture, low and spread along the shoreline rather than stacked into a tower, has been preserved. That is one reason this address appeals to guests who avoid large resorts : you move around on foot, on the level, between the building and the sea.

Minimum check-in age is 18. Children aged 0 to 5 stay free in their parents' room, which makes the property worth a look for a young family despite its upscale positioning.

Five places to eat on site

Tamarind reopens with five food and beverage outlets, which is generous for a hotel of this size.

• Caribbean Restaurant : Marriott presents it as the island's first air-conditioned restaurant devoted entirely to Barbadian cooking. Flying fish, cou-cou, macaroni pie and the catch of the day, served at the table rather than from a buffet.
• 246 Restaurant Bar : the name borrows the Barbados telephone code. International cuisine, evening service.
• Sugar Cane Restaurant : the main address for breakfast and midday dining.
• Harvest & Hive Coffee Shop : coffee, pastries and light bites between meals.
• Sugar Shack and Rilaks Deck & Bar : the beach and pool service points, where you can eat and drink without putting your shoes back on.

There is a main freshwater pool and a second adults-only relaxation pool with a hot tub. That separation earns its keep : parents know from experience that a family pool and a quiet pool are two ideas that sit badly in the same body of water.

The Dine Around program : what is actually included

Marriott built a Dine Around program for its Barbados collection, and it is a genuine selling point. From Tamarind you can dine at Crystal Cove, Waves and Treasure Beach at no extra charge, with a complimentary water taxi running between the west coast hotels.

The limits deserve to be stated plainly, because they have caught guests off guard.

• The House, which is adults only, does not receive guests from the other hotels in the collection.
• Colony Club grants roughly a 30 % discount on the bill rather than a complimentary meal. The difference shows up on the check.
• Turtle Beach is on the south coast and the water taxi does not go there.
• Bookings must be made ahead at the front desk, and evening tables go quickly in high season.

What the rate covers

At Tamarind, taxes, service charges and gratuities are included in the rate. That is a real difference from several west coast addresses where those amounts are added on arrival or departure. Barbados applies a room rate levy per room per night, VAT on accommodation and a product development levy. At the all-inclusive properties in the Marriott collection, all of it is already inside the quoted price.

Also included : meals and drinks at the hotel's outlets, wifi, non-motorised water sports and Dine Around access under the conditions described above. Excursions, scuba diving, the spa and treatments remain extra.

Paynes Bay beach : one thing to watch

This deserves a frank paragraph, because it is the one real uncertainty at this address. In June 2026, the Barbados Coastal Zone Management Unit described the erosion observed on several of the island's beaches as abnormal, and Paynes Bay was among the areas named. The large coastal restoration programme announced by the government runs in three phases, and none of them currently covers the parish of Saint James.

That said, west coast beach erosion is seasonal as much as it is structural : sand leaves with the swell on one side and returns on the other, and a shoreline in February rarely looks like the same shoreline in September. Paynes Bay remains a sheltered, calm bay, easy to swim in, and sea turtles pass through it, which makes it one of the best spots on the island to swim alongside them.

The sensible way to handle this is simple : ask your advisor to check the state of the shoreline in the weeks before you leave, and favour a sea-facing room over a plan that depends entirely on the width of the sand. If the beach matters more than anything else to you, there are less exposed bays on the same coast, and your advisor can name them.

Sargassum : keeping it in proportion

Sargassum comes up every year in conversations about the Caribbean, and 2026 drew some worrying forecasts. Two things are worth remembering. First, the west coast of Barbados, where Tamarind sits, is the Caribbean-facing side, sheltered from the Atlantic currents that carry the seaweed toward the east and south shores. Second, the episodes are intermittent : a beach affected one week can be perfectly clear the next, and hotel teams rake daily.

Climate and season

Barbados sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, east of the Antillean arc. The last major strike was Hurricane Janet, in 1955. That position explains why the island stays sellable through a good part of the storm season, when other Caribbean destinations become risky.

Who Tamarind suits

This address will suit couples and families looking for a solid all-inclusive without the industrial scale of the big resorts, on a calm coast, with the option of varying the dining through the Dine Around program. It will also appeal to guests who want to walk into Holetown, rent a car for a day, and treat the hotel as a base rather than an enclosure.

It will suit less well anyone who wants a guaranteed wide beach, a busy evening entertainment programme, or a property whose current version hundreds of travellers have already tested. On that last point, time will settle the matter : the first reviews of the renovated product should appear in the coming weeks.
