From early January through late March, humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay to calve and breed. It is one of the most popular natural attractions in the Dominican Republic.
The region has a tropical climate with average yearly temperatures of about 26 °C. Rainfall is high, around 2300 mm annually, with a drier season in winter and wetter months during summer.
Samaná is generally safe for tourists, especially in resort areas. It is best to stay cautious at night and avoid displaying valuables. Tap water is not safe to drink; bottled water is recommended.
A passport valid for at least six months is required. A tourist card is included with most flight tickets for stays of up to 30 days. Longer stays require a visa. Travelers must also complete an e-Ticket entry and exit form.
The local currency is the Dominican Peso (DOP). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, though carrying pesos is useful for local shops and services.
For whale season, January to March, it is best to book 6 to 12 months in advance. Hotels and tours sell out quickly.
