Norwegian Cruise Line: Freestyle Cruising, the fleet, and what to know before you book

Start with what really sets Norwegian apart: the fleet is spread unusually evenly. At most lines one or two ships carry the bulk of the calendar and the rest trail far behind. Here no ship takes over. The concrete consequence for you: the choice is made on destination and date, not on a flagship you simply have to be aboard.

What we carry

We carry the Norwegian fleet in full, and every ship holds departures on our calendar, which is rare: on most fleets we carry, some ships hold no dates at all. The number of cruises currently on offer is shown at the top of this page.

Freestyle Cruising, and who it does not suit

It has been Norwegian's stance since 2000, introduced aboard Norwegian Sky: no fixed dining hour, no assigned table, no strict dress code, and you go ashore at your own pace. If you want dinner at a set time, a table assigned for the week and a gala evening, this is not the line for you. It is not a shortfall, it is a decision, and an old one.

Where Norwegian comes from

Founded in 1966 by Norwegian Knut Kloster and Israeli Ted Arison, with a single ship, Sunward. It was then called Norwegian Caribbean Lines. Based in Miami, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings since the 2013 reorganisation.

The ships that carry the calendar

Norwegian Getaway leads our calendar, ahead of Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Epic. Loops that repeat in the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mediterranean, with enough variants that two weeks are not identical. We will not say what the fare covers: the formula changes from one departure and market to the next, and we have not measured it. Ask for the written list of the exact departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Norwegian runs around twenty ships, and we carry the fleet in full. The number of cruises currently on offer is shown at the top of this page.
Yes, every one. That is rare: on most fleets we carry, some ships hold no dates at all. Here, none.
Norwegian Getaway leads our calendar, but the gap to the next ships is small. It is the most even spread in our whole catalogue: at other lines a single ship carries double the next.
It means the choice is made on destination and date rather than on a flagship. No ship concentrates the calendar, so none is the one you have to be aboard. It is easier to compare, and it saves you paying for a name.

We will not say it in the line's place. What the fare covers changes here from one departure, market and cabin grade to the next, and we have not measured it departure by departure. Ask your advisor for the written list of the exact departure before booking, not after.
Often, yes. Your advisor can look beyond what appears here. The online catalogue is a way in, not the limit of what exists.
It depends on the departure and the market, not on the line. If French matters to you, say so before booking: it is checked departure by departure.
Yes, and it happens often in this trade: a line reuses the name of a ship it sold for a new ship. That is why we keep pages online for ships that have left, with what became of them. Without those, a search leads to the wrong ship.
On small ships, yes: few cabins, and the best go early. On large ones it is the cabin's location rather than the space itself that is decided early. Talk cancellation terms through with your advisor before you decide.
Your agency, and it alone. Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, your payments pass through a trust account, and the compensation fund for travel agency clients covers your departure. That holds whichever line you choose.
