The ship named for Helen of Troy
The S.S. Helen is the Super Ship Uniworld puts into service in 2028 on the Rhine, the Moselle and the Danube. The line named it after Helen of Troy and asked its designers to draw on classical antiquity rather than central Europe: pale marble, Mediterranean tones, Greek motifs.
The word the line keeps repeating about this ship is philoxenia, the Greek idea of hospitality toward the stranger. In practice the interiors are lighter and less heavily dressed than on earlier hulls in the fleet, where gold and dark wood dominate. Travellers who found Uniworld too opulent should look at this one again.
The hull
One hundred thirty-five metres long, 11.5 metres wide, 154 guests, 57 crew. One crew member for fewer than three guests, which puts the ship at the top of the European river market.
The hull is not new. It is the third in the series launched by the S.S. Émilie in 2026 and continued by the S.S. Marlene in 2027. The S.S. Clara follows the same year with identical measurements and the same stateroom mix. What separates these ships is the decor and the river, not the architecture.
Uniworld publishes neither tonnage nor deck count for its European ships. Any listing that gives a figure took it from a source other than the line.

The two Grand Suites combine with the adjoining Deluxe French Balcony stateroom to form a two-bedroom suite. It is the only layout on board that genuinely suits a family or three generations travelling together, and there are two of them. They go early.
Every stateroom gets handcrafted Savoir Beds of England, cotton sateen sheets and a marble bathroom with Asprey products, a heated mirror and a rain shower. Grand Suites and Suites add butler service, laundry, a mini bar, a Nespresso machine and breakfast served in the room.
The Classic category, 16.25 square metres, is the smallest on board. Before booking one, ask your travel advisor which deck it sits on and whether the window opens: the answer changes the trip far more than the missing square metres.
On the Rhine, the Moselle and the Danube
Few river ships work three basins. The S.S. Helen does, because its dimensions clear the locks on all three, which lets it run long itineraries that cross Europe end to end.
The most ambitious in the 2028 collection is Amsterdam to the Black Sea: thirty days from Amsterdam to Bucharest through nine countries. Then come Eastern Europe Exploration (25 days, Bucharest to Prague), Danube East and West (18 days, Vienna to Bucharest) and Empires of the Lower Danube (9 days, Belgrade to Bucharest), shared with the S.S. What the fare covers
Crew gratuities are included, which removes the most awkward question of the last evening. So are meals, with a selection of wines, beers and spirits served throughout the day. Scheduled excursions and planned transfers are part of the fare.
Wi-Fi is a courtesy service with no guaranteed bandwidth. Expect interruptions in the locks and on the remote stretches of the Lower Danube.
You still pay for airfare, visas, travel insurance, laundry outside the suites, the spa, communications and optional excursions.
Before booking for a traveller with reduced mobility
The contract speaks of reasonable efforts and stops there. No mobility equipment is provided, and a companion able to assist is required. The quay, the gangway and the cobblestones of the old towns do the rest. Ask for written confirmation about the specific ship rather than relying on a general fleet description.
Getting there from Quebec
The trip from Montreal happens in two stages: an overnight flight to Europe, then a transfer to the embarkation port. Travellers who arrive the same day often board exhausted. Those who allow themselves a night on land start the cruise properly.
Booking a new ship two years ahead has a concrete advantage: the full range of staterooms and dates is open, and the two combinable Grand Suites are the first to go. Your advisor can also hold a group on a specific date, which becomes difficult once the ship fills.
