Two rivers meeting at Lyon
Scenic Sapphire sails the Rhône and the Saône. The two meet at Lyon, and that
meeting shapes the whole route. The Saône comes down slowly from Burgundy, wide
and calm. The Rhône, below Lyon, pulls south with a markedly stronger current and
a series of deep locks.
One voyage therefore takes you from a peaceful river to a river that pushes.
The days differ, and so do the schedules: running down the Rhône takes less time
than working back up it, which is why two itineraries of the same length do not
call at the same places depending on direction. Our inventory counted 158
departure dates on 26 August 2026.
The hull and its transformation
Like Diamond, Sapphire came out of the Den Breejen yard in 2008 and was rebuilt
in 2017 for France. The transformation followed the same logic: remove berths to
enlarge the suites. The ship carries 155 guests in 75 suites, over 135 metres.
The refit left a separate French restaurant and a salt therapy room in the spa.
These belong to the 2017 generation and are absent from the older hulls of the
series still working the Rhine.
What the route shows
North, Burgundy and its hillside vineyards. South, Provence, Avignon, Arles and
the Alpilles. Between the two, Lyon, where the ship often makes a long call
because the city walks better than it tours by coach.
Some itineraries push toward the Camargue or the coast, but the ship does not
leave the river: the seaward part, where it exists, is done by road from the
quay.
The other ships in the fleet
Scenic Diamond does the same work around Bordeaux. Scenic Gem, shorter, is the Seine ship. Scenic Azure
serves the Douro, and Scenic Opal runs the Danube and the Rhine.
What is included, and what is not
Included: gratuities aboard and ashore, meals, standard wines and spirits at
table, Wi-Fi, a butler for every suite, Freechoice excursions, Enrich events and
Sundowner receptions. The European ships also carry electrically assisted
bicycles, free to use during port calls.
Not included: rare vintages and champagnes outside the standard selection,
spa treatments, and gratuities given away from the official route, in a taxi or
a restaurant in town.
That leaves air travel, which varies with the package. The line builds
arrangements with flights and others without, depending on the market and the
period. Your advisor will tell you which applies to the date you are looking at,
and it is a question to ask early rather than at signature.
The clientele aboard
Adult, and the line does not hide it. No children's club, no nursery, no youth
activities. The practical threshold sits around twelve years. A teenager curious
about history and landscape will do well; a seven-year-old will be firmly bored,
and that is not a fault of the ship but a choice of the line.
On access, the lift links the main decks but stops short of the sun deck,
reached by stair. Suites fitted for reduced mobility exist on every ship, near
reception. Check the deck plan before choosing your category.
The Quebec framework

The ship is the simple part of the file. The flight, the connection, the hotel
night before embarkation and the transfer to the pier make up the rest, and that
is where the real comfort of a departure is decided.
