The first generation of the series
Scenic Ruby came out of the Den Breejen yard in 2009. It belongs to the first
generation of the line's 135-metre ships, along with Scenic Pearl. That
generation carries 167 guests in 85 suites across fourteen categories.
The hulls built from 2012 carry 169 in sixteen categories. The two-berth gap
is trivial; the two-category gap is not. It means the newer ships cut the same
space more finely, with more intermediate levels between the entry suite and the
top suite.
In practice, on a 2009 ship the choice is simpler and the steps between
categories are sharper. Neither better nor worse: more legible.
Rhine, Main and Danube
The ship works the classic axis, from Basel to Amsterdam and on to Budapest
through the Main-Danube canal. Our count on 26 August 2026 found 126 departure
dates, roughly half of them built around the Basel-Amsterdam run.
It is the densest route in Europe for towns and castles, and the busiest. The
difference between two lines is decided there less by the itinerary, which is the
same for everyone, than by the hour of arrival at the quay and the distance from
that quay to the town centre.
What fourteen categories mean
The lower-deck suites have a high fixed window. The upper decks open onto a
retractable glass balcony, the signature of the series: a glass wall that lowers
and turns the suite into a veranda without exposing the room to rain.
The system earns its keep on the Rhine in spring, when the temperature does
not allow sitting outside but the landscape deserves to be watched seated.
The other ships in the fleet
Scenic Pearl is its direct contemporary. Scenic Crystal opens the following generation, Scenic Jewel and Scenic Jade
continue it.
What the cruise fare covers
The line's formula covers life aboard and the outings. Gratuities for crew,
guides and drivers are included. So are meals, along with the wines, beers and
standard spirits served at lunch and dinner. Every suite has butler service,
with no distinction by category. Wi-Fi is included, with the usual caveat about
throughput while under way.
Excursions belong to the fare through the Freechoice programme, which offers
several outings per port rather than a single one. Added to these are the Enrich
events, which open places the public cannot visit freely, and the Sundowners,
receptions held at dusk somewhere along the route. A handheld guide lent aboard,
called Tailormade, lets you walk a town alone with commentary in your ear.
Air travel depends on the package. The line sells arrangements with and
without flights depending on the market and the season, and the same itinerary
can appear in both forms. Have this confirmed before you pay a deposit: it is
the line that varies most from one offer to the next.
Who this ship suits
The clientele is adult. There is no children's club, no childcare and no
youth programme, and the line applies a practical threshold around twelve years,
with a margin of judgement that belongs to it. A family with young children will
be better served elsewhere, and it is better to hear that now than on the third
day.
A lift serves the main decks. It does not reach the sun deck, which is
accessible by stair. Every ship has suites fitted for reduced mobility, near
reception; the exact number varies and should be checked on the deck plan before
booking.
Booking from Quebec
Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la
protection du consommateur. The sums you pay move through a trust account kept
separate from the agency's own funds, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of
Travel Agents steps in where the law provides. That protection does not follow a
booking made outside Quebec.
A cruise like this is built on logistics as much as on the choice of ship:
flight, connection, a night on the ground before embarkation, transfer to the
pier. That is the part where a file comes apart when nobody is watching it.
