Viking Odin belongs to the first batch of Viking Longships, four ships christened together in 2012. She remains on the company's official roster and sails under the Swiss flag.

Why longships changed river cruising

Before 2012, European river ships laid out their cabins symmetrically around a central corridor. The longship introduced an offset corridor, which made room for veranda suites aft and increased living space without lengthening the ship, since the locks forbid lengthening it.

An engineering constraint became a selling point. Viking Odin is one of the four ships that met it first.

The ship

One hundred and thirty-five metres long, four decks with staterooms on three of them, one hundred and ninety guests, fifty-three crew. All ninety-five staterooms are outside: twenty-five standard, twenty-two French balcony, thirty-nine veranda, seven veranda suites and two Explorer suites.

Where she sails

The Rhine, the Main and the Danube, on programmes that reach Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and, overland from Nuremberg or Passau, the Czech Republic.

Before booking this ship rather than another

First-generation longships and those delivered since share the same layout and the same categories. The choice rarely turns on the ship and almost always on the date, the direction of travel and the embarkation port.
