Colony Club Barbados

Colony Club reopened in the first week of September 2025 after a full renovation, under a new name : Colony Club, a Luxury Collection Resort, Barbados. Marriott acquired the Elegant Hotels collection and redistributed its seven Barbadian addresses across its upscale brands. Colony Club is the only one carrying the Luxury Collection flag, and the only one that is not sold as an all-inclusive.

That last point is worth reading twice, because it changes how you budget the whole trip.

European plan : what that actually means

Colony Club is sold on a European plan. The room is included, everything else is paid on site. It is the standard formula at European resorts and major city hotels, and it is uncommon in the Barbados product sold in Quebec, where all-inclusive dominates.

The formula has convinced supporters. You eat what you want, when you want, at the hotel or elsewhere, and you do not pay in advance for meals you will skip. On the west coast, between Holetown and Speightstown, the restaurant scene is among the best in the Caribbean ; a stay at Colony Club lets you enjoy it without feeling you are wasting a package.

The trade-off is easy to state : your food, drink and Barbadian tax budget sits on top of the room rate. Barbados applies a room rate levy per room per night, VAT on accommodation and a product development levy. At an all-inclusive in the collection those amounts are already inside the price ; here they show up on the bill. Your advisor can cost the whole thing before departure so the comparison with an all-inclusive is an honest one.

From Elegant Hotels to the Luxury Collection

The Luxury Collection is Marriott's most upscale brand, gathering hotels with character, often historic or emblematic addresses in their region. Colony Club, with its seven-acre estate at Porters and its serpentine lagoon pools, fits that brief well.

Marriott's six other Barbadian addresses are sold all-inclusive : Crystal Cove and Turtle Beach under Tribute Portfolio, Tamarind, The House and Waves under Autograph Collection. If all-inclusive is what you want, those are the ones to look at. If freedom is what you want, Colony Club is the only one in the family that offers it.

Where Colony Club is

The hotel sits on Porters Road, in the parish of Saint James, north of Holetown. Allow roughly 29 km from Grantley Adams International Airport and about 14 km north of Bridgetown. That is farther from the airport than most west coast addresses, which means about fifteen extra minutes of driving and a distinctly quieter neighbourhood.

A direct Montreal to Bridgetown service starts on 13 December 2026, twice weekly through the winter season. Outside those departures a connection is required. Your advisor will check what exists for your dates.

The rooms

Colony Club has 96 rooms and suites spread across seven acres of mature gardens. Categories run from Luxury Poolside to a one-bedroom suite with balcony, by way of garden and ocean views.

The category that made the hotel's reputation is the Luxury Swim-Up : the room opens directly onto one of the lagoon pools, and you step into the water from your own terrace. It is the kind of detail people still remember about a hotel ten years later.

Marriott does not publish room sizes in square metres. Reviews from 2026 mention tightly laid out bathrooms and limited storage in some categories, renovation notwithstanding. If space matters to you, ask your advisor to aim for a suite rather than a standard room.

Six places to eat and drink

• Laguna Restaurant : the main restaurant, open all day, international flavours and local produce.
• Sunset Deck Restaurant : cocktails and small plates facing the sunset.
• The Rum Vault : over 150 rum labels, guided tastings and mixology evenings. For anyone who wants to understand Barbadian rum rather than simply drink it, this is one of the best addresses on the island.
• Sunset Bar : swim-up pool bar.
• Laguna Bar : teas, juices and cocktails through the day.
• Grand Hall and West Indies Tea House : tea service and cultural events.

An honest reservation about breakfast. Several 2026 guests found the morning room cramped and congested at peak hours, renovation notwithstanding. The workaround is the one every regular knows : go down early, or take breakfast on your terrace. Room service exists and the view usually beats the room.

The pools and the Porters beach

The site is built around several serpentine lagoon pools, with private cabanas and a waterfall. That is the visual signature of Colony Club, and the reason many guests spend more time there than on the sand.

The beach itself is beachfront, on the Platinum Coast. Good news : unlike several west coast addresses, no erosion complaints surface in the 2025 and 2026 reviews. Recent guests describe it as spacious and clean, and note that you can snorkel straight off the shore. The Porters area has held up better than Paynes Bay or Worthing, further south.

As everywhere on the island, a shoreline changes from one season to the next. Have your advisor check it in the weeks before you travel.

The Dine Around program : read the conditions

Marriott created a Dine Around program across its Barbadian addresses. Colony Club takes part, but with a particular status worth knowing before you book.

Guests of the collection's all-inclusive hotels who come to dine at Colony Club receive roughly a 30 % discount on the bill rather than a complimentary meal. In the other direction, because Colony Club is sold on a European plan, its guests do not receive included meals at the other properties. Travellers have been caught out on site by this asymmetry ; it makes sense once explained, and it is rarely explained at the point of booking.

Families, children and atmosphere

Colony Club welcomes families. Minimum check-in age is 18, and a seasonal Kids Corner takes 4 to 12 year olds.

Here is the nuance the Luxury Collection badge hides : the property is genuinely family-oriented in high season. Couples who came for quiet have found the dining room lively with children at mealtimes. That is a question of expectations rather than a fault of the hotel. If you want complete quiet, the Marriott collection includes an adults-only address, The House, and the neighbouring Fairmont Royal Pavilion cultivates a distinctly hushed atmosphere.

Sargassum and climate

The west coast of Barbados is the island's Caribbean-facing side, sheltered from the Atlantic currents that push sargassum toward the east and south shores. Who Colony Club suits

This address will suit travellers who like eating out, who want to explore the west coast rather than stay locked inside a package, and who prefer a landscaped estate to a large vertical resort. Rum enthusiasts will find the best cellar in the collection here. The swim-up rooms alone justify the trip for a couple travelling on an anniversary.

It will suit less well anyone who wants a fully closed budget before departure, anyone looking for a busy evening entertainment programme, or anyone who needs absolute quiet during school holidays. In all three cases, an all-inclusive in the collection will answer better.
