SANDALS ROYAL BARBADOS

Sandals Royal Barbados opened in December 2017 on Maxwell Beach, in Christ Church, and expanded in July 2021 to 338 suites. It is a couples-only all-inclusive, immediate neighbour of Sandals Barbados, with which it shares everything.

Its distinguishing feature fits in one sentence : there are only suites, and only in Club and Butler categories. No entry-level room, no exception.

All suites, all Club or Butler

This is what sets Royal Barbados apart from its neighbour. All 338 units are suites, and the only two service levels offered are Club and Butler. The butler is not a surcharge reserved for the most expensive rooms : it is part of the product across a good share of the categories.

The most sought-after categories are the Rondovals, round thatched-roof cottages with a private pool, the Skypools with a suspended plunge pool on the balcony, the Crystal Lagoon Swim-ups that open straight into the water, the Millionaire Butler suites and the beachfront suites with a private infinity pool.

A note on the numbers : you will still see 222 suites on some sites, including the Barbados tourism board's. That is the 2017 opening count, never updated after the 2021 expansion that added 66 suites in the South Seas Village area. The correct figure is 338.

One stay across two hotels

Royal Barbados and Sandals Barbados adjoin each other on the same Dover estate, and your stay opens both. You sleep here and dine there, at no extra charge.

That gives you around twenty restaurants and some fifteen bars, along with eleven pools and six hot tubs spread across both properties. It is a choice few Caribbean properties can offer without an excursion or a booking.

What the rate covers

Mandatory all-inclusive, with the same generous list as next door.

• Return airport transfers, with a Rolls-Royce for the premium suites.
• All taxes and all gratuities, tipping being forbidden by house policy.

• Bowling at Lovers Lanes, four lanes with a craft beer bar.

What exists here and nowhere else

Three facilities set Royal Barbados apart on the island.

The rooftop infinity pool, which is the hotel's signature image and the best seat on the property at sunset.

Lovers Lanes, a genuine four-lane bowling alley with a craft beer bar. It is a ready-made evening when the rain settles in, and nothing equivalent exists in a Barbadian all-inclusive.

The Clip Yard, a men's barbershop on site, which is a detail until you need one.

Maxwell Beach : a sargassum beach, not a beach in crisis

The distinction is worth drawing carefully, because it changes the decision.

Maxwell Beach has no documented erosion problem. Reviews describe it instead as one of the finest on the south coast, with very fine white sand and a gentle slope. In June 2026, visitors spoke of clear blue and turquoise water, on an uncrowded beach.

What it does receive is seasonal sargassum. Crews clear it every morning, but banks of seaweed sometimes remain suspended in the water after the raking, which spoils swimming on certain days. That is the point to understand for a February or March stay.

When conditions warrant, the hotel arranges transport to another beach on the island that is unaffected. Several travellers confirm this, and it is a real service rather than a brochure promise.

Our feature gathers the current picture, the forecast maps and the historically quietest periods : Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean and Mexico in 2026. A red flag is flown occasionally ; respect it.

What to know before booking

Here is the paradox of this address, and we would rather explain it than leave it unsaid. Royal Barbados is newer and more upscale than its neighbour, yet its score is slightly lower : 4.1 out of 5 across more than 4,300 reviews, against 4.2 at Sandals Barbados.

The complaints are not about the physical product, which draws unanimous praise, but about execution. Service is described as consistently slow, including for simple requests. The butler is excellent for some guests and poorly coordinated for others. Travellers also report humidity and ventilation problems in the rooms, with musty smells.

What that means in practice : you are paying for a superb product and you have to accept a Caribbean pace of service rather than a Swiss one. Guests who arrive knowing that are the ones who leave happy. Allow time for meals, book Butch's and La Parisienne on your first morning, and report any room problem immediately rather than at checkout.

Where Sandals Royal Barbados is

The hotel occupies Maxwell Coast Road, at Oistins, in the parish of Christ Church. You will also see St Lawrence Gap in the brand's marketing : it is the same area, on the south coast.

Allow about fifteen minutes of driving from Grantley Adams International Airport, transfer included in the package. Bridgetown is about ten kilometres to the west.

A direct Montreal to Bridgetown service starts on 13 December 2026, twice weekly through the winter season. Outside those departures, plan on a connection.

Climate

Who Sandals Royal Barbados suits

This address will suit couples who want a suite with a private pool, a butler and a budget fully closed before departure. The Rondovals and Skypools are rooms people remember, and the shared estate offers a choice of tables unmatched on the island.

It will suit less well anyone travelling as a family, anyone who demands quick and flawless service, or anyone who wants a beach guaranteed free of seaweed in every season. On that last point the west coast answers better : Crystal Cove and Tamarind sit on the Caribbean-facing side, sheltered from the currents that carry sargassum.
