Sandals Barbados occupies Dover Beach, at St Lawrence Gap, on the south coast. It is a couples-only all-inclusive, no children, and it shares its estate with Sandals Royal Barbados : guests of one move freely through the other.

It is the most complete package we sell in Barbados, transfers and gratuities included. It is also an address where two things are worth knowing before booking : the state of the beach by season, and the age of the rooms.

Two hotels, one stay

This is the structural asset of the address and it is rarely explained well. Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados are immediate neighbours on the same Dover estate, and your wristband opens both. You sleep on one side and dine on the other, at no extra charge and with no excursion to book.

In practice that means around twenty restaurants and some fifteen bars within reach of your room, eleven pools and six hot tubs spread across the whole. You will see figures of 18 or 21 restaurants in circulation ; the official counts do not quite reconcile, so we write what can be defended.

The difference between the two addresses is one of level. Royal Barbados is exclusively Club and Butler category, entirely made up of suites. Sandals Barbados offers the entry categories, which makes it the way into the estate on a more measured budget, with exactly the same freedom to move between them.

What the rate covers, and it is generous

Sandals runs on a mandatory all-inclusive, and the list is longer than the Caribbean average.

  • All meals at the restaurants of both hotels.
  • Premium spirits without limit, and a restocked in-room minibar.
  • Return airport transfers, which settles an expense most all-inclusives leave to the guest.
  • All taxes and all gratuities. Tipping is in fact forbidden by house policy, which genuinely changes the atmosphere : nobody is working for the tip.
  • Wifi throughout, non-motorised water sports, the glass-bottom boat, Hobie Cats, kayaks and paddleboards.
  • Complimentary scuba diving for certified divers, a rare benefit and an expensive one elsewhere.
  • Bowling at Lovers Lanes, the gym, daytime and evening entertainment.

The Red Lane spa, off-site excursions and certain paid experiences remain extra. A two-night minimum stay applies.

An honest reservation : we could not confirm whether the Barbadian accommodation levy is included in the Sandals rate. Your advisor will have it checked before you travel.

Dover Beach : the seasonal question

Let us be plain, because this is the number one complaint about the address. The south coast of Barbados receives sargassum, and Dover Beach is part of it. Travellers describe weeks when the beach was hard to use, with the smell that goes with it.

Now the nuance, and it matters. Other stays, in the same spots, pass with clean white sand and no seaweed at all. The variability is real and seasonal : nothing is settled from one week to the next, for better or worse. Crews rake daily, and Sandals arranges transport to another beach on the island when conditions warrant.

Our feature gathers the current picture, the forecast maps and the historically quietest periods : Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean and Mexico in 2026. Your advisor can steer your dates toward the calmest months, or toward the west coast if the subject genuinely worries you.

One technical detail works in the location's favour : rock breakwaters some twenty metres offshore break the swell and keep the water calm. That is real swimming comfort on a coast that is otherwise lively.

A last practical point drawn from the reviews : the loungers are numerous and packed close together, far from the promotional image of two isolated chairs facing the sea. Go down early if a particular spot matters to you.

Eleven restaurants on site

  • Butch's Chophouse : steakhouse, reservation required. It comes up constantly in the favourable reviews.
  • Kimonos : Japanese teppanyaki, reservation required. The other guest favourite.
  • Bombay Club : Indian cooking.
  • Portofino's : Italian.
  • Spices : Caribbean.
  • Schooner's : seafood.
  • Soy Sushi Bar : sushi.
  • The Mariner : grill.
  • Dino's Pizzeria : Neapolitan pizza.
  • Merry Monkey : British pub.
  • Café de Paris : French pastry.

Dress is casual throughout, which is not the case at every property of this calibre. Add the nine restaurants at Royal Barbados, freely accessible.

The rooms

Sandals Barbados has 280 rooms and suites, including suites with direct access to the river pool, presented as the island's longest, luxury suites and beachfront penthouses.

Their condition deserves frankness. The hotel was fully renovated in 2014, and partial room renovations took place in autumn 2024, on certain categories only. Travellers in 2025 and 2026 report rooms showing their age : damaged finishes, plumbing problems. Others have nothing to complain about.

The fix is simple and your advisor knows it : aim for a recently refurbished category rather than the cheapest. The rate difference is often modest and the comfort gap real.

Where Sandals Barbados is

The hotel occupies Dover Beach, at St Lawrence Gap, in the parish of Christ Church. Allow about fifteen minutes of driving from Grantley Adams International Airport, and the hotel sits roughly halfway between the airport and Bridgetown.

The transfer is included in the package, both ways. Premium suites add a Rolls-Royce to it.

St Lawrence Gap, right next door, is one of the liveliest streets on the island, with its restaurants and evening music. You do not need it, but it is there if the urge to go out strikes.

A direct Montreal to Bridgetown service starts on 13 December 2026, twice weekly through the winter season. Outside those departures, plan on a connection.

What to know before booking

Three points, stated simply.

The address is reserved for adult couples. No children, no club, no family rates. That is the very principle of the brand.

Service draws mixed reviews. Some guests describe remarkable attention, others a transactional service where an anniversary goes unnoticed. If your stay marks an occasion, say so when booking rather than on arrival : Sandals handles very well what is announced in advance.

Finally, a Barbadian government coastal restoration project covers the stretch from Rockley to St Lawrence Gap, with a start announced for late 2026. Our advisors will have the real schedule checked before you travel.

That said, the address holds 4.2 out of 5 across more than 6,600 reviews, which is a considerable volume and a solid score.

Climate

Barbados sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, east of the Antillean arc. The last major strike was Hurricane Janet, in 1955. The dry season runs December to May, with days around 29 °C and nights rarely below 22 °C. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca.

Who Sandals Barbados suits

This address will suit couples who want a budget fully closed before departure, transfers and gratuities included, with a choice of tables few Caribbean properties match. Certified divers get real value here, since diving is included.

It will suit less well anyone travelling as a family, anyone after a freshly renovated product, or anyone who wants a beach guaranteed free of seaweed in every season. On that last point the west coast answers better : Crystal Cove and Tamarind sit on the Caribbean-facing side, sheltered from the currents that carry sargassum.
