Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba at a glance

This address resembles nothing else on the island. It stands in the middle of Oranjestad, on the harbour, attached to the Renaissance Mall and the Renaissance Marketplace. You step out of the lobby into a town rather than onto a hotel strip. Then you board a water taxi that leaves from inside that same lobby, and twelve minutes later you are walking on a private forty-acre island.

The resort was long known as Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino. Since its 2017 acquisition by Wind Creek Hospitality it carries the name Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort and keeps Marriott's Renaissance flag. The two hotels inside it answer opposite needs, which explains much of its reputation.

Two hotels, two different stays

The Marina Hotel, on the harbour side, is adults-only. Its recently rebuilt rooms and suites look onto the marina and some open through French balconies. Its rooftop pool is likewise adults-only. This is the choice for couples and travellers who want quiet in the middle of a city.

Ocean Suites, a little further along, holds nothing but one-bedroom suites with a separate living area and a balcony, arranged around a landscaped beach and lagoon. Families stay here, and this is where the kids' club sits. Booking the right building changes the whole experience, so ask the question before you confirm.

The private island and its flamingos

Renaissance Island is the resort's real signature and one of the few genuinely unique things on Aruba. Forty acres, a complimentary water taxi leaving the lobby roughly every fifteen minutes, and two beaches with distinct purposes. Flamingo Beach, adults-only, hosts the flamingos that wander freely among the loungers. Iguana Beach, larger, welcomes families and offers kayaks.

A third cove, Spa Cove, hosts open-air treatments. Papagayo Bar and Grill and the Mangrove Beach Bar handle meals on the island. Access comes with the room, which remains this address's strongest argument.

The beach: what to understand

Here is the point to grasp before booking. The Renaissance is not on Palm Beach or Eagle Beach. It faces Oranjestad harbour. Swimming happens on the landscaped beach and lagoon at Ocean Suites, or on the private island.

For many travellers the trade is a good one: a private beach with no vendors and no crowd, instead of public sand shared with ten hotels. For anyone whose ritual is walking out of the room and onto the sand in three steps, Palm Beach or Eagle Beach will serve better. Where you eat on site

Around ten venues spread across the two hotels and the island. L.G. Smith's Steak and Chop House handles the grill, Aquarius serves all three meals buffet or à la carte, Fresco does Italian and Solé takes care of poolside. FLUX mixes cocktails at the pool, The Lounge takes over from eleven at night until three in the morning, and a Starbucks rounds things out.

On the island, Papagayo Bar and Grill and the Mangrove Beach Bar and Fish Shack do the serving. The 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar and Grill sits in the adjoining Renaissance Marketplace. The downtown position also puts every restaurant in Oranjestad within walking distance, which is rare for a resort of this size.

Is it an all-inclusive?

The base rate covers the room. An all-inclusive plan can be added as an option, with a four-night minimum. It covers all three meals, à la carte or buffet, standard-brand drinks, kids' club access, a spa discount and a casino match-play coupon.

The decision usually settles quickly. A traveller who plans to explore Oranjestad's restaurants, a few steps away, is better off on the base rate. The casinos, the spa and the pools

Two casinos operate on site, both under the Wind Creek banner and open around the clock. The Crystal Casino covers close to 1 400 square metres; the Seaport Casino overlooks the marina and houses a race and sports book. Between them they hold more than 300 machines alongside roulette, blackjack, baccarat and three-card poker.

Okeanos Spa runs from eight in the morning to nine at night and offers a signature Aruban aloe treatment, plus treatments given in the cove on the private island. Three pools spread across the two hotels, including the adults-only pool at the Marina, and the REVIVE fitness centre stays open at all hours.

Travelling with children

The Patamingo kids' club runs day and evening sessions. Families stay at Ocean Suites, where the landscaped beach, the lagoon and the kayaks at Iguana Beach fill the days. The one-bedroom suite layout with its separate living area makes evenings easier when children go to bed early.

Since the Marina Hotel is adults-only, a family cannot stay there. That detail is settled at booking and is worth confirming.

Who this resort suits

It fits travellers who like walking through a real town, browsing shops, eating somewhere different each night and coming home on foot. It fits couples who want an adults-only hotel paired with a private beach and resident flamingos. It fits families who prefer a suite to a room and an island of their own for the day.

What to know before you book

The resort sits about three kilometres from Queen Beatrix International Airport, roughly a ten-minute drive, making it the closest on the island. Aruba lies outside the hurricane belt and the trade winds blow year-round, holding the humidity down and masking how strong the sun is. Sunscreen goes on more often than you would think.
