The hotel is adults-only, which sets the tone: this is an address for couples, solo travellers and people who come for the town as much as for the beach.

The beach: across the boulevard

The hotel stands at 370 J.E. Irausquin Boulevard, on the inland side. Palm Beach begins across the street, three or four minutes' walk depending on your pace. The hotel organises that trip rather than leaving you to it: reserved chairs on the sand, a complimentary shuttle, and paddleboards and kayaks lent at no charge.

The layout has real advantages. Rooms stay quieter than those in a front-row tower, the view from the street stays open, and the sand at Palm Beach is public anyway, since nobody owns a stretch of it. Anyone whose ritual demands stepping out of the room and onto the sand in three paces will prefer a front-row hotel, and our advisors will point you to one if that is you.

Adults-only: what that changes

The adults-only formula explains much of the atmosphere. Around the pool, you can hold a conversation. In the evening the place becomes a launching point toward the restaurants and casinos of the strip, all within walking distance.

Which room to choose

Three families of accommodation share the inventory: Premium Rooms, Premium Suites, and Premium Fitness Rooms, the last equipped for working out without leaving the room. Bedding comes as a king or as two doubles, the latter sleeping up to four adults.

Where you eat on site

Three venues, scaled to the house. Island Grind Café handles coffee and light morning and midday meals. The Gastro Bar serves internationally inspired tapas and cocktails, with a happy hour in the early afternoon. A counter serves the pool and its swim-up bar.

The rest happens outside, and that is deliberate. The Palm Beach restaurant row starts a few steps away: Peruvian, Argentinian, Italian and Aruban kitchens, beach tables and American classics. Few hotels on the island are so well placed for eating somewhere different every night.

The art, the pool and the activities

Seventeen murals by Paul Wong cover the hotel's walls. The Aruban artist works with the island's motifs and colours, and the result gives the property a personality most chains do not even attempt. You walk through it as through a small gallery.

The outdoor pool with its swim-up bar serves as the centre of gravity during the day. The gym stays open at all hours and yoga sessions are offered at no charge. The hotel also runs wine tastings, cocktail workshops and pop-up boutiques. Paddleboards and kayaks are lent free for the beach.

Is it an all-inclusive?

No. The rate covers the room, and meals and drinks are settled as you go, on site or in the dozens of restaurants nearby.

It fits couples who want the calm of a small adults-only hotel while staying in the middle of the action. It fits solo travellers, and few Caribbean hotels welcome them so naturally. It fits anyone here to eat, go out and explore the island rather than to camp on a lounger all week.

What to know before you book

Allow fifteen to twenty minutes by road between Queen Beatrix International Airport and Palm Beach. Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt and the trade winds blow year-round: they hold the humidity down, keep seaweed away from this coast and mask how strong the sun is, so sunscreen goes on more often than you would think.

The Aruban florin is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere and outlets follow the North American standard.
