The address did not simply change signs: it was demolished and rebuilt. The Mill Resort and Suites, a west-coast institution for decades, closed in April 2018. What reopened in late 2019 is a new building, the first resort-style property under the Courtyard flag in the Caribbean.

One hundred and forty-eight rooms, nine categories, a saltwater pool area with a swim-up bar, a spa, a kids' club, a bistro and a convenience market. The scale stays modest next to the Palm Beach towers, and a 4.6 out of 5 on TripAdvisor puts the address among the best-liked in the Noord district.

The beach: a shuttle and a few minutes

The hotel does not front the sand. It sits back from the boulevard, and Palm Beach is reached by complimentary shuttle or a few minutes on foot. That is a fact worth knowing before booking rather than on arrival.

The trade-off is real. A recently built room, a property on a human scale and a rate that reflects the position: that is what those few minutes buy. The sand at Palm Beach is public anyway, and nobody owns a stretch of it. Which room to choose

Nine categories run along three axes: bedding, meaning a king, two queens, or a king with a sofa bed; and view, meaning limited, garden or pool. Sofa-bed rooms take a family of three or four without extra floor space.

Most units have a balcony or terrace, the sofa-bed categories excepted. Since the whole building dates from 2019, the gap between categories comes down to the view rather than to condition. Accessible rooms are also available.

Where you eat on site

The offering is deliberately tight. Allegra Bistro handles all three meals with an Italian-leaning menu. Delia's Terrace runs the swim-up bar at the pool. The Courtyard Market supplies coffee, sandwiches and whatever you forgot, at any hour.

Breakfast is included in the rate, served from half past six until eleven. Beyond that, the Palm Beach restaurant row starts a few minutes' walk away with dozens of addresses. That is exactly the logic of the place: you sleep here, you eat everywhere.

Is it an all-inclusive?

No. The rate covers the room and daily breakfast. Other meals and drinks are settled as you go, on site or outside.

The formula makes sense in this neighbourhood. Palm Beach concentrates one of the strongest dining scenes in the Caribbean, and a traveller who intends to use it gains nothing by paying twice. The pool, the spa and the children

The saltwater pool area is the centre of gravity here, with the Delia's Terrace swim-up bar and a whirlpool. Saltwater differs from chlorinated water in feeling gentler on skin and eyes, a detail many families come to appreciate by the third day.

Sirena Island Spa handles massages and skin therapies. The Kid's Cave club takes children with a splash pad, movies and an outdoor play area. The whole set-up stays modest in size, in keeping with the hotel, but covers the essentials of a family week.

Who this resort suits

It fits travellers who want a recent, well-kept room near Palm Beach without paying the front-row premium. It fits families who prefer a hundred-and-fifty-room property to a six-hundred-room tower. It fits anyone planning to eat out most evenings.

Anyone for whom the beach must start at the foot of the room, or who wants a full all-inclusive with seven restaurants, will be better served elsewhere on the strip. Our advisors will say so plainly rather than place you in the wrong spot.

What to know before you book

Allow fifteen to twenty minutes by road between Queen Beatrix International Airport and the Palm Beach area. Aruba lies outside the hurricane belt and the trade winds blow year-round: they hold the humidity down, keep seaweed away from this coast and mask how strong the sun is, so sunscreen goes on more often than you would think.

The Aruban florin is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere and outlets follow the North American standard. There is no casino on site, but several are walkable in the district. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before departure.
