THE CRANE RESORT

The Crane opened in 1887 and presents itself as the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Caribbean. It occupies forty acres atop a cliff in St Philip, on the southeast coast, with a one-and-a-half-acre cascading pool complex and a glass-fronted lift that descends to the beach, the only one of its kind in the eastern Caribbean.

Let us start with the most important correction, because it changes how you budget the stay : The Crane is not an all-inclusive.

The meal plan : continental, not all-inclusive

The Crane's base rate covers the room and breakfast. Other meals are paid on site, or bought in advance as a meal package, including a partial all-inclusive option.

We insist on this because the confusion circulates widely, including on our own pages until today. A guest who arrives believing everything is paid for finds a bill at every meal, and the setting makes it hard to compensate by going out : The Crane is isolated, in St Philip, with virtually no restaurants within walking distance.

That combination, dining not included and isolation, is the real thing to understand before booking. It is far from disqualifying : seven food and beverage outlets on site and many units with a full kitchen give you plenty of latitude. But it calls for a realistic budget, and your advisor can cost it before departure, with or without a meal package.

A condo hotel rather than a chain hotel

The Crane has belonged since 1988 to Canadian owner Paul Doyle, who still runs it. The property mixes fractional-ownership units, private residences and inventory reserved for the Hilton Grand Vacations club since the late 2010s.

There are therefore two distinct entities : "The Crane Resort" and "Hilton Grand Vacations at The Crane". They are neither the same bookings nor the same inclusions, and the confusion comes up regularly on traveller forums. Have it made clear which one you are booking.

The official site lists 27 suite types without publishing a total, and sources range from 252 to 364 units. We therefore write "more than 250 units" rather than an invented figure. The gap most likely comes from private residences moving in and out of the rental pool by season.

Categories run from Garden View Residences to Penthouses, in junior, one, two and three-bedroom configurations. Many units have a full kitchen, a living room and a dining room, and several have their own private pool, from plunge pool to rooftop pool. This is an apartment product rather than a hotel room, and that is precisely what offsets the meal-free plan.

Crane Beach : beautiful, and demanding

Let us be plain, because this is the question that decides whether the address suits you.

Crane Beach is probably the most photogenic beach in Barbados : very fine white sand, framed by twenty-four-metre cliffs, sheltered by a coral reef. You reach it by stairs or by the glass-fronted lift, which handles the drop elegantly. Access is locked at sunset, for safety reasons.

Now the facts that count. This is the southeast coast, facing the Atlantic, not the Caribbean side. The swell is strong, the rip current real, and reviews from 2025 and 2026 regularly mention red flag conditions. Travellers write that you need to be a trained swimmer. The hotel itself advises avoiding the water when the red flag is flying and exercising caution at all times, because the lifeguard post, staffed by the Barbadian government, is not manned every day.

This is therefore not a beach for young children. Several parents have written exactly that. A family with children who want to splash about will be far better served on the west coast or the sheltered south coast.

The beach is public, with its own access by stairs. Loungers are complimentary for hotel guests.

Sargassum : what The Crane does, and it does it well

The east, southeast and south coasts of Barbados are the most exposed to sargassum, and The Crane sits there. Reviews from 2025 describe episodes when the beach was hard to use.

Here is what still makes the address defensible, and it is a genuine service. The Crane is listed among the island's properties that have put sargassum containment measures in place, and above all it arranges transport to a west coast beach when conditions warrant. Several travellers confirm this. In other words, when the beach is unusable, the hotel finds you another one.

Remember too that episodes are seasonal and variable : an affected week can be followed by several spotless ones, and nothing is certain at the scale of a given beach on a given day. The pools, the real heart of the stay

The cascading pool complex runs across an acre and a half at the cliff top, looking out over the Atlantic. It is the property's signature feature and, for many guests, where the day actually happens.

There are five outdoor pools and a children's wading pool, a hot tub, and one adults-only pool, on top of the private pools attached to certain suites. A spa, a gym and tennis courts round it out.

One useful detail : water sports are not documented on site, and the hotel states explicitly that it does not provide bodyboards.

Seven places to eat

• Zen : Japanese and Thai cooking, the best rated on the estate.
• Azure : Caribbean, breakfast and à la carte service.
• Poesia No. 3 : Italian, successor to D'Onofrio's Trattoria.
• The Carriage House : poolside dining.
• The Grove : beach bar and grill.
• Bar 1887 : wine and tapas.
• The Village Café : coffee and gelato.

Room service is available. You will see figures of four or five restaurants elsewhere : those are old data, the official site names seven.

An honest reservation drawn from recent reviews : table service is slow, with waits reported beyond an hour, and evening staffing is thin. Guests describe a very quiet hotel after half past nine. The regulars' workaround is to dine early, and to use the suite kitchen for breakfasts and simple meals.

Where The Crane is, and the airport close by

The hotel occupies the Crane area of St Philip. It is six to eight kilometres from Grantley Adams International Airport, ten to fifteen minutes of driving : the closest to the airport of every address we sell in Barbados. After a flight with a connection, the difference is genuinely felt.

On the other hand Bridgetown is eighteen kilometres away, which also makes it the farthest from the capital. Plan on a rental car or taxis to explore the island, and factor that into your budget.

A direct Montreal to Bridgetown service starts on 13 December 2026, twice weekly through the winter season. Outside those departures, plan on a connection. The airport transfer is charged extra.

Families and children

Children are welcome, with the complimentary Calypso Kids Club for ages 4 to 12, a wading pool and the cascading pools. Minimum check-in age is 18.

The real point of vigilance remains the beach, described above. A family with young children will be well served by the pools, provided they accept that sea swimming is not a given. If bathing in the sea with little ones is central for you, say so to your advisor : they will point you toward the west coast.

Climate

Barbados sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, east of the Antillean arc. The last major strike was Hurricane Janet, in 1955. The dry season runs December to May, with days around 29 °C and nights rarely below 22 °C. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca.

Who The Crane suits

This address will suit couples and families who want space, a kitchen in the unit, a spectacular setting and quiet, and who accept renting a car. Its 4.2 out of 5 across nearly 4,000 reviews rests on real strengths : the suites, the pools and the staff, often named with warmth.

It will suit less well anyone who wants a budget fully closed in advance, calm safe water for young children, quick table service, or the option of walking out to dinner. On those four points the west coast or the sheltered south coast answer better : Crystal Cove for a true all-inclusive in calm water, Mango Bay for walking to restaurants.
