At Pinto Wharf, a row of 18th-century port warehouses converted at the foot of the walls. Entering the harbour is a highlight in itself: the ship slides into the Grand Harbour between golden limestone bastions tens of metres high, close enough to make out the sentry boxes.
By the Barrakka Lift, a 58-metre panoramic elevator five to ten minutes' walk along the water from the quay. It carries passengers up to the Upper Barrakka gardens in under a minute, for a modest fare. It is the shortcut that spares you the climb in the heat.
Everything on foot. The peninsula measures barely a kilometre by 600 metres: the Upper Barrakka gardens, St John's Co-Cathedral, Republic Street and the Grand Master's Palace link up effortlessly. If time remains, a crossing to Birgu in a traditional boat rounds out the day.
