Frequently Asked Questions
At Phu My port, an industrial terminal on the Thi Vai river among cranes and containers, about 70 kilometres southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Nobody comes ashore here for the pier itself.
Between 90 and 120 minutes each way depending on traffic. That is why almost every passenger opts for an organized excursion or a pre-booked private vehicle.
No, there is no attraction within walking distance of the terminal. The call has to be planned as a full-day expedition: without organized transport, the day is spent on board.
Three main ones: Ho Chi Minh City, 90 to 120 minutes away, for colonial heritage and markets; the Cu Chi tunnels, a full-day outing; or Vung Tau, about 35 kilometres away, for beaches and hillside temples.
The heart of old Saigon is walkable around Dong Khoi street: the central post office with its great glass roof, Notre-Dame cathedral in red brick imported from France, and the Reunification Palace with its intact 1960s and 1970s furnishings.
It is the city's great covered market, whose clock tower has been a landmark for more than a century. The aisles overflow with Vietnamese coffee, silk, lacquerware and fruit. Haggling is part of the game, always with a smile.
A long underground network dug by hand over many kilometres, which served as shelter, hospital and supply route during the war. You see the camouflaged trapdoors and widened sections where visitors can slip a few metres underground.
A seaside resort on a peninsula about 35 kilometres from the port, with seafront promenades, hillside temples and a large statue of Christ at the top of a staircase of several hundred steps.
A steaming pho or a crisp banh mi at the counters in the back of Ben Thanh market, eaten elbow to elbow with regulars. Iced coffee with condensed milk suits the break well.
A generous one, whichever option you choose: Vietnamese traffic has its moods, and a 90-minute drive can easily become 120 minutes at the end of the day.
