Frequently Asked Questions
In the main port basin of Valencia, southeast of the city centre. The quay area is industrial and has nothing to see on foot, so you take the cruise line shuttle, a taxi or the city bus from the marina. Allow about twenty minutes by taxi or shuttle to reach the old town.
No, the distance is too great to walk. A taxi or shuttle takes about 20 minutes and the city bus from the marina 25 to 30 minutes. Only Malvarrosa beach is sometimes walkable, in 10 to 20 minutes depending on the berth.
The route that works: the Ciutat Vella first, with the cathedral, the Miguelete bell tower and the Lonja de la Seda, then the Mercado Central, and the City of Arts and Sciences on the way back, since it sits halfway between the old town and the port. Adding a full visit to the aquarium is not realistic; you have to choose between it and the historic centre.
The Lonja de la Seda, the 15th-century silk exchange listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its twisted columns. A few streets away the cathedral keeps a chalice venerated as the Holy Grail, and the Miguelete bell tower is climbed in 207 steps for a full circle view over the glazed rooftops.
The euro. Credit and debit cards are accepted in the vast majority of shops, restaurants and taxis. At the Mercado Central and with small vendors, a few coins and small notes are still useful.
Spanish (Castilian) and Valencian, a variety of Catalan, both have official status, and signage is often bilingual. English gets by in tourist areas and taxis; French is far less common.
Spring and autumn, when the heat stays manageable for a full day of walking in the old town. July and August are hot and busy, which makes a walking itinerary harder. Winter is mild but daylight is short.
Yes, and it is one of the city's strengths: the Turia gardens and the City of Arts and Sciences, with its hands-on science museum and its aquarium, easily fill half a day. The Mercado Central also appeals to children. In the old town, cobblestones and summer heat make strollers harder to manage.
Yes, this is the birthplace of the dish, which comes from the countryside around the city. The maritime quarter, near Malvarrosa beach, lines up century-old restaurants that cook it properly. Because it takes a long time to prepare and is served mainly in the middle of the day, a short call means booking ahead or settling for a counter at the Mercado Central. A glass of horchata, the milky drink pressed from tiger nuts, completes the experience.
Because the Turia river was diverted after the devastating flood of 1957 and its old bed was turned into a linear park. Century-old bridges, orange trees and running paths have made it the green artery of Valencia. It is also the most pleasant corridor between the old town and the City of Arts and Sciences.
