Frequently Asked Questions
At one of four possible points, depending on the ship: alongside at Leith, at the Newhaven ferry berth, at anchor off South Queensferry, or alongside at Rosyth on the north shore of the Forth. Leith and Newhaven are about 5 kilometres from the centre; South Queensferry 16 km and Rosyth 24 km.
From Leith and Newhaven, shuttles, city buses and taxis reach the centre in about twenty minutes. From South Queensferry and Rosyth, allow considerably more time: both are much further out.
The Royal Mile and the castle, early in the morning, before the midday crowds. If time allows, add the short, easy climb up Calton Hill for the panorama. Keep a full hour in hand for the return: traffic is heavy late in the day.
The run of cobbled streets descending from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the sovereign's official residence in Scotland. In between: stepped closes, hidden courtyards, St Giles' Cathedral and tartan shops, in a dark stone setting that has stayed remarkably coherent.
Yes, if you want to avoid a long queue. The castle, set on its volcanic crag, displays the Honours of Scotland and offers sweeping views over the capital. Booking ahead transforms the day when your call is short.
A great deal, and passengers are wrong to hurry past. The old port, long an independent burgh, has reinvented itself: converted warehouses, award-winning restaurants along the water at The Shore, a weekend market. It is an honest option when the call is too short for the city centre.
Yes, ten minutes' walk from the Newhaven berth, at the Ocean Terminal shopping centre. Queen Elizabeth II's former yacht, in service from 1954 to 1997, is toured with an audio guide through state rooms, cabins and the engine room. It is one of Scotland's most popular attractions.
The Forth Bridge, an 1890 masterpiece of red steel inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Passengers at anchor pass beneath it by tender, and the sight more than makes up for the extra few minutes of crossing.
Yes, but prepare the legs. The castle is a hit, and so is the Britannia. That said, the Royal Mile is a continuous slope, the closes are cobbled and often stepped, and the distances add up quickly. A stroller is a genuine handicap here.
Pound sterling and English. Scottish banks issue their own notes, valid throughout the UK but sometimes refused abroad through unfamiliarity: spend them before you leave. Cards are accepted everywhere.
