Frequently Asked Questions
At Galataport, opened in 2021 on the European shore, right in the heart of the city. The terminal is buried beneath a promenade of shops and restaurants: you step ashore literally into the street, at Karaköy. No need to look for a shuttle, everything starts on foot.
By the T1 tram, from the Tophane stop a few minutes' walk from the quay. It crosses the Golden Horn and drops you at the foot of the major monuments in about fifteen minutes. That is faster and more reliable than a taxi in Istanbul traffic.
Two or three sites, no more. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace stand within steps of each other in Sultanahmet, but each takes time. Better to savour two properly than rush all four.
A 6th-century basilica turned mosque, whose dome has defied fourteen centuries of architects. It functions today as a place of worship: covered dress required, headscarf for women, shoes removed. Expect a queue, it is rarely short.
A great deal, without ever taking the tram. The lanes of Karaköy mix third-wave cafés, artisan workshops and simit sellers; toward Tophane, the Kılıç Ali Paşa mosque, a 16th-century work by the great architect Sinan, sits beside its restored hammam and the Istanbul Modern museum.
Yes if your legs are willing: it's a twenty-five-minute uphill walk through steep streets from the quay. Its circular balcony takes in the entire Golden Horn. It's the best overall view of the city, and it pairs well with a late afternoon in Karaköy.
A covered labyrinth of more than 4,000 shops where carpets, lamps and jewellery are haggled over in a cheerful piece of theatre, ten minutes' walk from Sultanahmet or one more stop on the T1. Bargaining is the rule: offer half and smile.
At the Egyptian Bazaar near the Galata Bridge, fragrant with spices and Turkish delight. It is more compact than the Grand Bazaar and easier to fit into a short call. Taste before you buy, the traders offer samples unprompted.
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a headscarf for women, shoes removed at the entrance. Scarves are lent on site, but bringing your own saves waiting. Mosques close to visitors during prayers: check the times before making the trip.
The Turkish lira. Cards work everywhere in museums, restaurants and larger shops, but keep cash for the tram, simit sellers and bargaining at the bazaar. Turkish is spoken, with fluent English throughout the tourist areas.
