At the new pier at Tourlos, about two kilometres from town, or at anchor with tender transfer to the old pier right in the centre. Either the day starts two kilometres from the scenery, or straight inside it.
Three simple options: the sea shuttle, about ten minutes to the centre, the bus, or a walk along the coastal pavement, a pleasant half hour in the morning. Taxis also wait at the terminal exit.
Chora and its maze of lanes, the Kato Mili windmills and the Alefkandra quarter known as Little Venice easily fill an afternoon. Add a beach on a longer call, or swap the whole thing for Delos if archaeology appeals more.
Yes, the caiques leave from the old pier and the crossing takes half an hour. The round trip with the visit takes half a day. The site has almost no shade: hat, good shoes and water are essential, and check return times before boarding.
They were laid out to confuse pirates. Today they confuse visitors, which is exactly the pleasure of the walk: vaulted passages, whitewashed steps, bougainvillea and tiny chapels with red or blue domes.
