Frequently Asked Questions
Most ships use the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, south of the business district. The Marina South Pier MRT station sits next to the terminal and puts downtown a few stops away, air conditioning included.
Mainly by MRT: fast, air-conditioned and easy to read. Taxis are plentiful outside the terminal, metered and straightforward. Walking works for short hops if you alternate with cool breaks.
Gardens by the Bay, less than two kilometres away. It holds the Supertrees, steel structures twenty-five to fifty metres tall clad in living plants and linked by an elevated walkway, plus two vast conservatories.
The Flower Dome with its Mediterranean flora, and above all the Cloud Forest, an artificial mist-wrapped mountain where a thirty-five-metre waterfall drops through highland vegetation.
Gardens by the Bay plus a walk around Marina Bay, taking in the Merlion and the view from Marina Bay Sands. It is the densest circuit and the closest to the ship. Adding the historic quarters needs a full day.
By MRT, and they sit minutes apart. Chinatown with the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Little India with its Tamil temples, Kampong Glam with the gold-domed Sultan Mosque: three worlds within a twenty-minute ride.
At a hawker centre, the state-run street-food halls listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. At Maxwell Food Centre or Lau Pa Sat: Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, satay, char kway teow. The longest queues mark the best stalls.
Yes, and it is free. The sound-and-light display runs after dark, which suits passengers whose call stretches into the evening. Ships sailing in late afternoon will miss it.
Very good. Everything is air-conditioned, clean and easy to navigate, distances are short by MRT, and both Gardens by the Bay and the hawker centres work for all ages. The real opponent is the equatorial heat: bring water and take breaks.
The Singapore dollar. Cards work almost everywhere, including many hawker centres, but keep some cash for small stalls. English is an official language and is spoken everywhere.
