Most often at Prostneset, right downtown, steps from the shopping streets. The largest ships sometimes berth at Breivika a few kilometres away, with shuttles into the city centre.
Yes, if you berth at Prostneset. The centre, the Polar Museum, Polaria, Storgata street and the wooden cathedral are all walkable. Only the Arctic Cathedral, on the mainland shore, needs a half-hour walk across the bridge or a few minutes by city bus.
The Fjellheisen cable car up to Storsteinen for the panorama, then the centre on foot with the Polar Museum and Storgata. If architecture appeals more, swap the museum for the bridge crossing to the Arctic Cathedral. Trying to do it all in half a day means rushing.
The cable car that lifts its red cabins to the Storsteinen ledge at 421 metres, at the foot of the mountain on the mainland side. Four minutes up and the panorama opens: the whole island with its grid streets, the bridge, the interlocking fjords. Trails allow a walk back down.
A church consecrated in 1965 on the mainland shore, stacking concrete triangles that suggest, depending on the eye, an iceberg, a tent or fish-drying racks. A vast stained-glass window closes the east end and floods the interior with blue light. Note: the wooden Lutheran cathedral is downtown — they are two separate buildings.

Very much so. Polaria shows Arctic aquariums and bearded seals in a building shaped like ice slabs tipped over by the wind, the cable car appeals to every age, and the centre is easy to walk. It is one of the most complete northern Norwegian calls with children.
In warm layers, whatever the season. You are 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and the weather shifts from one street to the next. The top of Storsteinen is noticeably colder and windier than the pier.
