Ships anchor in the bay and tenders land passengers at the Giardini Naxos seafront landing stage. It is an anchorage: in heavy swell the transfer can be compromised.
Taormina is seven kilometres away, perched on its spur. Excursion coaches, shuttles and taxis climb the switchback road in about twenty minutes. The regulars' advice: go early, the climb is better savoured before the midday crush.
The ancient stage, raised as early as the third century BCE and reworked by the Romans, frames a panorama few monuments can claim: the Ionian coast below, and Etna as backdrop, exactly on axis. Allow time to sit on the tiers.
One direction only. Either Taormina: the ancient theatre, corso Umberto, piazza IX Aprile. Or stay below: the resort's long ribbon of dark sand and its terraces facing the anchorage. Adding Isola Bella to Taormina makes the day tight but feasible.
The main artery strings together medieval gates, Gothic palaces, flowered squares and elegant shop windows. Piazza IX Aprile, a terrace open to the sea, offers one of Sicily's most popular pauses: lemon granita or ricotta cannolo, with street performers on the chequered paving.
By cable car, which links the heights to the Mazzarò cove in five minutes. Isola Bella is a tiny island joined to the shore by a spit of pebbles, a former private estate now a nature reserve.
It was on this shore that Greek colonists founded, in the eighth century BCE, the first Hellenic colony in Sicily. Today the seaside resort mainly serves as the gateway to Taormina, but the antiquity of the site is real.
Yes, about two hours, along the sea caves. It gives the reverse perspective: the hilltop town seen from the water, clinging to its rock between sky and sea.
The euro and Italian; English is widely spoken in Taormina, heavily visited by international travellers. Cards work in central Taormina; keep cash for taxis, the cable car and seafront kiosks.
It is perched and its alleys are steep: staircases, slopes, uneven paving. Corso Umberto stays broadly level once you arrive, but access to the theatre and the cross streets require working legs.
