Miami Travel from Canada: The Complete Guide
Miami is one of the easiest U.S. sun destinations to reach from Canada: about 4 hours nonstop from Montreal and about 3 hours 20 minutes from Toronto, with Air Canada and American Airlines flying year-round. Canadian citizens need no visa and no ESTA; a valid passport is all that is required to enter by air, for a tourist stay of up to 6 months. The best season runs from December to April, the dry season, with temperatures of 24 to 28 °C in South Florida. There is no time difference to manage, since Miami sits in the Eastern time zone like Montreal and Toronto. Budget accordingly, though: Miami is an expensive city, especially South Beach hotels in high season. Here is what to know before you book.

Why Miami
Miami is the one Florida destination that truly combines a big city with a beach vacation. You can spend the morning on the sand at South Beach, have a Cuban coffee on Calle Ocho at lunch, and end the day in front of the Wynwood murals. The historic Art Deco district of Miami Beach, known for its exceptional concentration of pastel 1930s buildings, is best explored on foot.
It is also a remarkable home base. Everglades National Park is about an hour from downtown. PortMiami, one of the largest cruise ports in the world, makes it easy to pair a few nights in the city with a Caribbean cruise in a single package. And Fort Lauderdale, about 40 km to the north, widens your options for both flights and hotels.
Let's be honest about one thing: Miami is expensive, more so than the Florida average, and the urban energy is not for everyone. If quiet beach time is your priority, see our Florida guide to compare regions, or browse our United States travel page for other ideas. For an urban, cultural and beach trip within a short nonstop flight of Montreal or Toronto, however, Miami is hard to beat.
When to go
High season runs from December to April: dry weather, 24 to 28 °C, snowbird season and the most expensive months of the year. From May to October it is hot and very humid, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms; that is low season, and the cheapest time to visit. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, peaking August through October, so cancellation insurance is strongly recommended for travel in that window. November and early May often deliver the best balance of weather and price.
A word about sargassum: researchers at the University of South Florida are calling 2026 a record year in the Atlantic, and Miami Beach is among the Atlantic-coast beaches affected, mostly from spring through summer. Tourist beaches are cleaned early each morning and conditions change day to day. Your travel advisor can check beach conditions before you leave.
| Period | Climate | Verdict |
| December to April | Dry and mild, 24 to 28 °C | Ideal, but the most expensive: book early |
| May to October | Hot, very humid, afternoon storms | Low season, good prices; hurricane season June 1 to November 30; possible sargassum |
| November and early May | Still mild, thinner crowds | Often the best value for money |
Getting there from Canada
From Montreal, the nonstop YUL-MIA flight takes about 4 hours, with Air Canada and American Airlines operating year-round, roughly two departures a day in 2026. From Toronto, YYZ-MIA takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, with Air Canada and American Airlines year-round and Porter added seasonally from October, for a total of about 21 flights a week.
One alternative worth knowing: Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL), about 40 km north of Miami, where fares are often cheaper. Air Canada flies there year-round from Montreal, with Air Transat and Porter joining seasonally from November 2026 and round trips advertised from about $424 CAD as a guideline; from Toronto, Air Canada, WestJet, Porter and Flair together offer around 20 flights a week. Always compare both airports, since the savings on the ticket can cover the transfer to Miami. See our Fort Lauderdale page for details, and book several months ahead for the December-to-April high season and school breaks.
Miami's neighbourhoods and highlights
South Beach and the Art Deco district
South Beach is Miami Beach's most famous stretch of sand, lined by Ocean Drive and Lummus Park. Right behind it sits the historic Art Deco district, renowned for its exceptional concentration of pastel 1930s buildings. Guided walking tours depart from the Art Deco Welcome Center on Ocean Drive.
Little Havana
Little Havana is Miami's Cuban heart, built around Calle Ocho, 8th Street. Come for the Cuban coffee counters, the cigar shops and the domino games at Máximo Gómez Park. Half a day on site, ideally around a meal, is plenty.
Wynwood and the Design District
Wynwood is Miami's street-art quarter, famous for the Wynwood Walls and its giant murals, surrounded by galleries and microbreweries. The neighbouring Design District plays a different card, focused on design and high-end boutiques. The two combine well in a single outing, on foot or by car.
Downtown and Brickell
Downtown and Brickell form Miami's urban core, where the towers, hotels and restaurants cluster. It is a logical base for a business trip, a night before a cruise departure, or any traveller who prefers city life to the beach.
The Everglades nearby
Everglades National Park lies about an hour from downtown Miami. Airboat excursions and alligator watching make it the most popular day trip from the city.
The cruise port (PortMiami)
PortMiami is one of the largest cruise ports in the world, minutes from downtown. For a flight-plus-cruise package to the Caribbean, arriving a day or two before embarkation lets you see the city and absorb any flight delay.
The budget, in Canadian dollars
Miami is one of Florida's most expensive destinations, and South Beach sits at the top of the scale: in high season, mid-range hotels commonly run $390 to $590 CAD a night. Add parking, which is costly and scarce on Miami Beach, and tipping, expected in restaurants at the usual American rate of about 15 to 20%. The exchange rate used here is about $1.40 CAD per US$1, checked in July 2026.
| Item | Indicative range in CAD |
| Round-trip flight, Canada to Florida | About $300 to $700 depending on season and carrier |
| Hotel per night, high season (December to April) | About $225 to $310 budget; $390 to $590 mid-range |
| Hotel per night, low season (May to August) | About $100 to $180 budget; $195 to $310 mid-range |
| Car rental | About $55 to $90 per day; $400 to $630 per week, before taxes and insurance |
| Meals per day, per person | About $30 to $55 budget; $75 to $120 mid-range |
All amounts are guidelines only: taxes, resort fees and tips are often added to posted prices.
Entry requirements and health for Canadian citizens
- A valid passport is mandatory to enter the United States by air.
- Visa and ESTA are not required for tourism: Canadian visitors can normally stay in the U.S. for up to 6 months, per travel.gc.ca.
- Stays of 30 days or more: registration with the U.S. government has been required since April 2025. The good news for air travellers: an electronic I-94 is generated automatically on arrival, and you are then considered already registered.
- Travel insurance is essential: without travel health insurance, medical care in the U.S. is entirely at your own expense, even for a short visit.
- Risk level (travel.gc.ca, July 2026): "Take normal security precautions," the lowest advisory level.
- A valid Canadian driver's licence is accepted for driving in Florida; tolls there are fully electronic.
- In an emergency, dial 911, as in Canada, and check travel.gc.ca for updates before departure.
Three pieces of advice from our travel advisors. First, always compare fares into MIA and FLL; the price difference often pays for the 40 km transfer. Second, if your stay is centred on Miami Beach, consider skipping the rental car and renting for one day only, for the Everglades; you will avoid expensive parking and the rental agencies' daily toll-transponder fees of roughly US$5 to US$14. Third, if you travel between June and November, add cancellation insurance because of hurricane season, on top of the medical coverage that is essential year-round.

Frequently asked questions about Miami
Do Canadians need a visa to visit Miami?
Canadian citizens are exempt from both visa and ESTA requirements for tourist visits to the United States, which can normally last up to 6 months. A valid passport is mandatory for entry by air. For stays of 30 days or more, arriving by air automatically generates an electronic I-94 that counts as your registration.
How long is the flight to Miami from Montreal?
The nonstop YUL-MIA flight takes about 4 hours, with Air Canada and American Airlines flying year-round, roughly twice daily in 2026. From Toronto, the nonstop is about 3 hours 20 minutes. Fort Lauderdale airport, about 40 km away, is an often cheaper alternative gateway.
When is the best time to visit Miami?
December to April: it is the dry season, with temperatures of 24 to 28 °C, but also the most expensive period. November and early May often offer the best trade-off between weather and price. Summer is hot, humid and stormy, and hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Is Miami safe for Canadian travellers?
As of July 2026, the Government of Canada advised travellers to the United States to simply "take normal security precautions," its lowest advisory level. Apply the usual big-city common sense and carry valid travel insurance, since American medical care is very expensive.
How much does a Miami trip cost?
As a guideline, budget about $300 to $700 CAD for the round-trip flight, $225 to $590 CAD per hotel night in high season depending on category, and $75 to $120 CAD per person per day for mid-range meals. Miami is an expensive city; low season, from May to October, cuts hotel costs considerably.
Is there a time difference between Canada and Miami?
Miami is on Eastern time, exactly like Montreal and Toronto, so there is no time difference from most of Central and Eastern Canada. You land without jet lag, which makes Miami practical even for a short getaway of a few days.
Miami or Fort Lauderdale: which should I choose?
Choose Miami for city life, neighbourhoods like Little Havana and Wynwood, and the cultural scene; choose Fort Lauderdale for a more relaxed pace, its canals and generally gentler prices. The two cities are about 40 km apart, so you can stay in one and visit the other. Flights into FLL are often cheaper than into MIA.
Do I need a car on Miami Beach?
For a stay centred on South Beach and the Art Deco district, you can easily do without one, especially since parking there is expensive. A car becomes useful for the Everglades, Wynwood or Fort Lauderdale; renting for a single day is often the smartest play. Florida tolls are fully electronic, so plan your payment method to avoid the rental agencies' daily fees.
Can I combine Miami with a cruise?
Yes, and it is one of the destination's biggest strengths: PortMiami is one of the largest cruise ports in the world, minutes from downtown. A package combining flights, a few nights in the city and a Caribbean cruise is easy to put together. Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale offers a second embarkation point about 40 km away.
Do I need Spanish in Miami?
English is all you need to travel in Miami. Spanish is very widely spoken, particularly in Little Havana around Calle Ocho, so a few words of Spanish enrich the experience without being necessary. Tourism staff serve customers in English without any difficulty.
