Because since 2021 large ships have been barred from passing in front of St Mark's Square. Italian authorities closed the Giudecca canal to them in order to protect the lagoon, and cruise ships now berth at Marghera, on the industrial mainland shore.
By transfer: a road shuttle to Piazzale Roma, or a train from Mestre. Allow twenty to thirty minutes. This charmless preamble has one virtue: it sets up one of the great threshold moments of any voyage, that of stepping out on foot into a city built entirely on water.

On foot and by vaporetto. Transport tickets are sold at machines at Piazzale Roma, the same place the port shuttles arrive. The traghetto, a shared gondola that crosses the Grand Canal in two minutes for a few euros, is the cheapest version of gliding through Venice.

Beyond the Rialto bridge and its fish market, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello offer quiet campi where children play football, mask workshops, hidden courtyards and side canals where gondolas pass delivery boats. The city has more than 400 bridges, and each frames a different picture.
Cicchetti in a bacaro: these small bites served with a glass of wine are the Venetian way to have lunch standing up — fast, and far better than the tourist menus on the main squares.
It depends how much you trust the timing. The line's excursions simplify logistics and guarantee the ship waits for you. Independent visiting is entirely feasible for anyone who likes walking, provided you leave early and watch the clock on the way back.
