Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the berth. The luckiest dock at the South Harbour or Katajanokka, 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the Market Square. Most large ships use Hernesaari, about 4 kilometres from the centre, served by shuttles, taxis or tram: allow about ten minutes by vehicle.
At the Market Square, Kauppatori: stalls of fresh peas, Nordic strawberries and hot doughnuts, under the eye of the gulls. A few steps away, the old brick market hall serves remarkable smoked salmon.
One of the most coherent neoclassical ensembles in Europe, a block from the Market Square: the spotless Lutheran cathedral at the top of its steps, flanked by the university and the government palace.
Because Finland spent a century under the Russian Empire. Uspenski Cathedral, in red brick with golden domes, stands five minutes from the Market Square and makes the point better than any textbook.
In the Design District south of the esplanade: galleries, studios and shops of glassware and textiles, Marimekko and Iittala foremost. Esplanadi avenue nearby invites a stroll under the lime trees.
A church carved directly into the rock and capped with a copper dome, 20 to 25 minutes' walk from the centre or a short tram ride. It is one of the most surprising buildings in the city.
A vessel of wood and glass facing Parliament, fifteen minutes' walk from the centre. It is the symbol of the Finnish relationship with reading, and one of the busiest public spaces in the capital.
By public ferry, fifteen minutes from the market quay. This UNESCO-listed sea fortress spreads its eighteenth-century bastions, tunnels, museums and gently sloping meadows across several islands linked by bridges.
Two to three hours for the crossing and an unhurried loop. It is the excursion to choose if the weather cooperates: you picnic facing the open sea and watch the ships come in.
Salmon soup, pickled herring and cinnamon buns, korvapuusti, in the market halls and on the terraces. The curious can carry on to the Löyly public sauna on the shore near Hernesaari: fierce steam and a sea dip for the brave.
