The red brick of the old neighbourhoods, the glass towers of the Seaport, the white sails out on the harbour: Boston can be read from the deck long before docking. Ships tie up at Flynn Cruiseport, the former Black Falcon Terminal, set at the far end of the Seaport District among the old port warehouses now converted to new uses. Downtown sits about three kilometres away, a distance easily covered by taxi, the Silver Line bus, or even a good pair of walking shoes. Few American cities pack so much history into such a compact radius.

Getting to the Heart of the City

The walking route is worth considering: the harborside path runs along the docks, past museums and Seaport terraces, so you arrive already steeped in the city's maritime atmosphere.

Following the Red Line

Boston had the brilliant idea of painting its history right onto the ground. The Freedom Trail, a four-kilometre line of red bricks, connects sixteen founding sites of the American Revolution, from Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument, passing along the way the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat in the world, nicknamed "Old Ironsides" since the War of 1812. Along the route come, one after another, the Old State House where independence was proclaimed, the site of the 1770 massacre, Paul Revere's house, and the Old North Church, from which the famous warning lanterns were hung. There's no need to walk the whole trail: the stretch between the Common and Faneuil Hall Marketplace covers the essentials and takes one to two hours, breaks included.

Markets, Oysters and Little Italy

Around Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market bustles from noon into the evening: clam chowder, lobster rolls and pastries all compete for passersby's attention, beneath the porticoes where orators once rallied the crowds. A few streets away begins the North End, the Italian neighbourhood, where fine grocers fill the air with the smell of espresso and cannoli are still sold individually in string-tied boxes. The narrow streets here keep an Old World feel, with laundry lines, social clubs, and saints' feast day celebrations that spill onto the street in summer. Seafood lovers should head to the Union Oyster House, serving oysters since 1826 in a dark-wood setting barely changed since.

Other Directions Depending on Your Taste

• The New England Aquarium and its seals, right on the inner harbour docks.
• The Museum of Fine Arts and its encyclopedic collections, reachable by subway.
• The cobblestone streets and gas lanterns of Beacon Hill, perfect for photography.
• The Public Garden next to the Common, with its willow trees and famous pedal-powered swan boats, a local institution since the nineteenth century.
• Harvard's campus, across the Charles River, for a day extended in the direction of learning.

America's Origins, Without the Effort

What stands out in Boston is how easy it all is. Everything connects, everything is walkable, and every street corner seems to have signed its own page of history. You could spend your entire port call following the Revolution's trail, or simply settle for a seafood feast facing the harbour: either way, it'll be a good day. As the ship casts off and the Seaport towers shrink behind the stern, one thing becomes clear: this city is quick to visit, but slow to leave, and rarely for good.
