At the port berth, from which a free shuttle runs to the port entrance. From there, twenty minutes' flat walk, or a short taxi ride, reaches La Spezia Centrale station.
By train, leaving every 20 to 30 minutes and serving the five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. The first is a quarter of an hour by rail, the last about 45 minutes. The combined train-and-trail card is sold at the central station.
Two or three well chosen are enough. Riomaggiore and Manarola, the closest, give the best time-to-emotion ratio, and the panoramic path above them offers viewpoints people still talk about long afterwards.
Summer crowds and timing. The initial trip to the station deserves planning: take the earliest possible departure to get ahead of the midday crush. At peak times the carriages fill fast. Keep a generous margin for the return.
A village about thirty minutes from the centre by bus or boat, lining up tall coloured facades facing Palmaria island. At the end of the headland, the church of San Pietro, Genoese Gothic of the thirteenth century, stands on its rock above the waves. Crowds are often thinner than in the five villages.
Three options, one per call. The Cinque Terre by train, two villages maximum. Portovenere, quieter, for comparable intensity. Or Lerici, its beaches and medieval castle, for a relaxed day.
Beaches, elegant villas and a medieval castle perched above the cove; a lift spares tired legs the climb. It is the choice for relaxed calls, in the bay where Byron and Shelley came seeking inspiration.
It is a major Italian naval arsenal, an active, sincere port city with no tourist gloss. Its pedestrian streets and public gardens facing the roadstead appeal to urban wanderers, but most of the interest lies half an hour away.
The euro and Italian; English is widely spoken in the busy Cinque Terre. Cards work everywhere, including for train tickets. Keep cash for village kiosks and buses to Portovenere.
May, June, September and October. In July and August the trains are packed, the village lanes clog and the heat makes the trails hard going. Out of season the same coast can be walked without elbowing through.
