Frequently Asked Questions

At Rønne, the island's main town, whose centre is about a fifteen-minute walk away. Some itineraries anchor instead off Gudhjem on the north coast and bring passengers ashore by tender.
Far away. The island sits out in the Baltic, closer to Sweden than to Copenhagen, and that isolation forged an identity of its own: pink granite, smoked herring, round churches and fishing villages clinging to the rocks. Danes sometimes call it the sunshine island.
Old Rønne and its ceramic workshops take two hours. Add the round church at Nylars, close to Rønne and easy to fit into a call. On a longer stop, Gudhjem and its smokehouses, about 24 kilometres away, are worth the trip.
Four striking white towers raised between the 12th and 14th centuries — Østerlars, Nylars, Olsker and Nyker — which served at once as sanctuaries, refuges and defensive works against Baltic raiders. Østerlars, the largest, impresses with its hollow central pillar covered in medieval frescoes.
The island's signature dish: herring smoked over alder wood, served on rye bread with chives and a raw egg yolk. The name means sun over Gudhjem. The white chimneys of the smokehouses mark the addresses; eating it on a terrace facing the Baltic is the tastiest moment of the day.
Cobbled lanes winding between half-timbered houses and brick facades weathered by salt, workshops of potters and glassblowers, and a few museums on local history and ceramics. You discover the quarter without a map, which is the right way to do it.
The ruins of a medieval fortress, among the largest on the continent, set on the granite cliffs of the island's north. It appears on most organised excursions, often combined with the round churches or the coastal smokehouses.
The Danish krone. Denmark has not adopted the euro. Cards work everywhere, including at the smokehouses and craft workshops: no cash is needed for the day.
Danish, with very good English in shops and at the sights. Much of the summer trade comes from Germany and Sweden, so German is often understood. French is rare.
Yes, in the south: the long white sand beaches around Dueodde are among the finest in Denmark. They do require a trip out from Rønne, and the Baltic stays cool even at the height of summer — worth knowing before you make the journey.
