Frequently Asked Questions

By tender. The island has no pier for large ships: yours will anchor in Road Bay to the north, and tenders will land you directly at the village of Sandy Ground, on a beach lined with low houses.
A long strip of pale sand wedged between the sea and a salt pond, crossed by a single street. Bars follow one another without hurry: Johnno's and Elvis', two local institutions, serve grilled fish and punches. Behind the village, the remains of the old salt works recall that before tourism, Anguilla lived on salt.
Shoal Bay East, on the northeast coast, made the island's reputation: remarkably white sand, clear water and seabed well suited to snorkelling. A taxi gets you there in about fifteen minutes from Sandy Ground.
Yes, from the beach shacks, which lets you spend a few comfortable hours before heading back to the bay. Outside group arrivals, the place stays surprisingly peaceful.
An islet sitting on the water about fifteen minutes by boat from Sandy Ground beach: a few palms, a grill serving lobster and chicken, and a reef all around for snorkellers. Places are limited, so ask on arrival ashore if the crossing appeals.
By taxi. Drivers will readily agree on a pickup time, the system works well and distances stay short on this island 26 kilometres long.
A beach and a fish lunch, essentially. The choice is between staying at Sandy Ground, heading to Shoal Bay East or trying the crossing to Sandy Island. Keep an hour to wander back through the landing village.
The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the official currency, but US dollars circulate widely. The language is English. Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory.
Yes, for families who want beaches and clear water. That said, there are no casinos, no high-rises, no traffic and no organized attractions: the island chose quiet development, and its roughly 15,000 residents seem committed to it.
Not much, and the island makes no apology for it. In The Valley, the small capital, churches, Creole houses and mostly single-storey government buildings sit side by side. Wallblake House, a plantation house built in 1787 and carefully restored, is one of the few colonial-era survivors and can be admired from outside in a few minutes.
