Frequently Asked Questions
At Salisbury Wharf in Mount Maunganui, at the foot of the volcanic cone Mauao. The village is a walk of under a kilometre along Pilot Bay.
The 232-metre volcanic cone standing guard at the harbour entrance — everyone here simply calls it the Mount. Well-kept switchback tracks climb it between sheep paddocks and pohutukawa groves.
Climb Mauao in the morning, then the beach and the heated saltwater pools. Anyone wanting geysers must choose Rotorua and give it the whole day.
The tracks are well maintained, but start early: heat builds fast on the exposed slopes. Those preferring an easy walk can take the base track, a flat coastal circuit of about forty-five minutes.
80 kilometres, about an hour by road. Day excursions usually combine a geothermal site — geysers, bubbling mud pools, coloured springs — with a Māori cultural experience including song and a traditional earth oven.
It surprises you on arrival and is quickly forgotten. The landscapes are far less forgettable. The Māori guides' storytelling, between founding legends and deadpan humour, ranks among passengers' best souvenirs.
Two, for two moods: inside the harbour, the calm water of Pilot Bay suits families and cautious swimmers; on the ocean side, the main beach takes surfers and long walkers, with lifeguards in season.
Heated saltwater pools at the foot of the cone, where you soak tired calves after the climb. A very civilized local tradition; towels can be hired on site.
Yes, about an hour by road. The film set lines its round-doored hobbit holes across a carefully maintained farm hillside. The excursion takes up much of the port call.
Not really. It lies seven kilometres away across the harbour bridge, and many passengers spend the whole day at Mount Maunganui without going there — missing nothing essential.
