Everything at Cozumel begins with the water. When Jacques-Yves Cousteau dived there in the early 1960s, he ranked these reefs among the world's finest, and the Mexican island has never since ceased to draw those who wish to see beneath the surface. To taste the seabed without expedition, Chankanaab Park, a quarter-hour's taxi drive south, combines a developed beach, botanical garden and lagoon. You enter the water from shore to swim above corals frequented by angelfish and parrotfish, amid submerged statues—a Christ, a Virgin, the Mayan rain god—become artificial reefs. The formula suits families perfectly: chairs, lockers, restaurants and on-site cultural demonstrations, with the option to do nothing but float.

Palancar and the Great Southern Reefs

Divers and more ambitious swimmers head for the southern reefs, Palancar and Columbia foremost, accessible by boat from the wharves or marinas. Coral formations there draw columns and gardens where turtles, rays and silvered schools move, in visibility often exceeding thirty metres. Half-day excursions fit well with port-call schedules and usually include a stop at El Cielo, a sandbar of white sand sown with starfish, where turquoise water reaches the waist. It is the image most passengers take from Cozumel.

A Detour to Ixchel

The island is more than a shore. At the centre, beneath vegetation, the San Gervasio site gathers the remains of a Mayan sanctuary dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility, where mainland women came on pilgrimage long before Spanish arrival. The ruins remain modest compared to those on the mainland, but the visit, half an hour from the wharf, offers an hour of shade, iguanas and history for those who wish to vary their beach day.

The Sun of Departure

Ships often leave Cozumel late in the day, when the sun descends toward the mainland and sets the strait ablaze.
