Frequently Asked Questions
At the Argostoli quay, right in the centre. The heart of the capital begins five minutes from the gangway, and the seafront promenade leads to the small market where fishermen sell their catch straight from the boats.
Yes. Loggerhead turtles cruise calmly in the lagoon a few metres from the quay, often near the fish market. The De Bosset bridge, 800 metres from the terminal, is one of the best places to watch them.
Choose early: the island is large and its attractions are far apart. Either Argostoli on foot with the De Bosset bridge, or Melissani and Myrtos combined in half a day. Fiskardo takes up almost everything.
A cavern near Sami, about forty minutes away, visited by rowing boat with a local boatman. Around midday, when the sun drops vertically through the collapsed roof, the water blazes with almost phosphorescent blues and turquoises.
Only about twenty minutes on the water, but it ranks among the strongest images an Ionian call can offer. Excursions often combine it with the village of Sami.
Most excursions stop at the roadside viewpoint, about 45 minutes from Argostoli, where the view plunges onto the arc of white pebbles between two cliffs. Descending to the shore takes extra time; many prefer to take it in from above.
The island's only town to come through the 1953 earthquake intact: its pastel Venetian houses cluster around a cove full of yachts. It lies about an hour and a half by road each way, best kept for long calls.
A nineteenth-century stone causeway crossing the Argostoli lagoon, the longest of its kind over the sea in Europe. The walk is flat, with the mountains as a backdrop, 800 metres from the terminal.
Yes. The lagoon turtles fascinate children, the De Bosset bridge is an easy walk and Lithostroto, the paved street in the centre, is lined with pastry shops and cafes. Melissani is also a hit, though the drive is long.
The euro and Greek, with English widely spoken in Argostoli. Car hire and taxis are available near the quay: agree the price before setting off, and keep cash for the villages.
