Frequently Asked Questions
Immediately beside the town centre, at the mouth of the Seine. A few minutes on foot bring you to the old quays and the Vieux Bassin. It is one of the easiest calls in Normandy.
The Vieux Bassin and the quai Sainte-Catherine, the church of Sainte-Catherine, then the Eugène Boudin museum. Keep time for aimless wandering in the lanes: that is where Honfleur is at its best.
The heart of the town, dug in the 17th century. Along the quai Sainte-Catherine, listed as a historic monument since 1933, some forty narrow houses, sometimes seven storeys high, raise their slate facades above the moored sailing boats.
It is the largest wooden religious building in France, listed as a historic monument since 1875. After the Hundred Years' War, the town's shipwrights built it using shipyard methods: look up in the nave and you see two upturned ship's hulls serving as vaults.
It stands across the square on its own stone base. That unusual separation is one of the peculiarities of a building raised by ship's carpenters rather than masons.
Honfleur gave painting Eugène Boudin, master of skies, who introduced the young Monet to working outdoors on the nearby beaches. The Boudin museum holds more than 90 of his works plus a collection devoted to the painters who gathered at the ferme Saint-Siméon, their favourite inn.
The composer was born here, and his house-museum offers a sound trail as whimsical as his music. It agreeably wrong-foots anyone expecting a conventional museum.
Samuel de Champlain sailed from here for Canada. His bust stands in the jardin des Personnalités, west of town, whose paths follow the estuary and honour local figures.
Calvados, pommeau or salted butter caramels, from the Norman produce shops. Art galleries number in the dozens: Honfleur is still a painters' town, and easels still go up on the quays.
The euro, cards accepted everywhere. French is spoken; Honfleur receives many foreign visitors and English is easy to find in museums, galleries and restaurants.
