Frequently Asked Questions

At the Railroad, Broadway or Ore docks, all a short walk from the centre. Five to ten minutes takes you to Broadway, the main street.
Yes, completely. The National Park Service maintains Broadway as an open-air museum within Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park: period saloons, balconied hotels and general stores follow one another over a few blocks.
The White Pass train takes about three hours out and back to the summit, leaving time for the town afterwards. Otherwise, the free ranger-led walking tour of the historic district pairs well with the pioneer cemetery and Reid Falls.
The White Pass and Yukon Route, a narrow-gauge line built in 1898 during the gold rush. Vintage carriages climb nearly 900 metres over some thirty kilometres, skirting gorges, waterfalls and trestle bridges up to White Pass on the Canadian border.
Left-hand seats on the way up give the best views over the valley. The route is recognised as an international civil engineering landmark, alongside the Eiffel Tower.
In 1897 and 1898 tens of thousands of prospectors landed here before tackling the passes to the Yukon on foot, each required by the Canadian mounted police to haul a tonne of supplies. The park visitor centre, in the old railway depot, tells the story with period maps and photographs.
Yes, and you only need to walk two streets away to find mountain quiet. The Dewey Lake trail switchbacks up to a clear lake in about forty minutes of steady effort; the easier waterfront path leads to Yakutania Point.
One of the most startling buildings on Broadway: its facade is covered with thousands of pieces of driftwood set in mosaic. It is the photograph everyone takes home from Skagway.
The US dollar and English. If your excursion crosses the pass into the Yukon, carry your travel documents: the Canadian border is at the summit.
Mid-May to mid-September. At the height of summer Broadway moves to the rhythm of the gangways and quietens down in the late afternoon; the White Pass train stays spectacular in clear weather and in mist alike.
