At the maritime station, from which ten to fifteen minutes of flat walking reaches the Porto Antico, the redeveloped old basin. Five minutes more takes you into the historic centre. No compulsory shuttle, no costly transfer.
Yes, and it is the call's greatest strength. The Porto Antico, the caruggi of the medieval centre, San Lorenzo cathedral and via Garibaldi are all walkable from the maritime station, on broadly flat ground.
The medieval alleys of the historic centre, so narrow that the sun reaches them only at midday. You get lost, which is the point: century-old shops, friggitorie where farinata sizzles, hanging laundry, corner madonnas. It is one of Europe's largest medieval centres, partly listed by UNESCO.
A three-hundred-metre street lining up the Renaissance and baroque palaces of the great merchant families, the core of the Palazzi dei Rolli system recognised by UNESCO. Several house museums, and an open gateway is often enough to admire courtyards and ceremonial staircases free of charge.
An entirely walkable loop: the Porto Antico, the caruggi to piazza San Lorenzo with its cathedral striped in black and white marble, then the climb to via Garibaldi. Families might swap part of it for the aquarium, which needs a good two hours.

The main streets, the Porto Antico and via Garibaldi can be walked without concern during the day. Some caruggi in the port district are seedier after dark: stick to busy streets and keep an eye on your belongings in the narrow alleys.
