That is the real decision of the call, and it is more interesting than it looks. Seoul is an hour away by road and remains the day's magnet. But Incheon can fill an entire day on its own, and too many travellers pass through without looking at it.
Gyeongbokgung Palace and its changing of the guard, the hanok lanes of Bukchon, the markets of Myeongdong: a well-planned day takes their measure, provided you leave early and keep a comfortable margin for the return. Metropolitan traffic here is unforgiving.
Korea's only official Chinatown, born with the opening of the port in the nineteenth century and climbing a hillside. Red lanterns, stone lions, steep stairs and cooking aromas. The district claims to have invented jajangmyeon, the black bean noodles that became a national dish.
The murals of the Songwol-dong fairytale village brighten a whole area of low houses. The former trading houses and banks of the open port era, converted into museums, tell of Korea's sometimes rough encounter with the world. At the top of the hill, Jayu Park offers a shaded pause and a view over the harbour.
This is where Korea opened to international trade in 1883, and where General MacArthur landed in 1950 to turn the course of the war. His statue overlooks Jayu Park, above the harbour.
The former island, now joined to the city, which has become a family gathering place: a long esplanade facing the Yellow Sea, cafes, grilled seafood stands and a few retro fairground rides. It is everyday Korean life, with no major monument and no queue.
A new city rising on land reclaimed from the sea, south of the harbour. Its Central Park, crossed by a seawater canal where kayaks and small boats glide, makes for a surprising walk among towers, footbridges and manicured gardens.
The contrast between Chinatown and Songdo fits into one day: a century and a half of Korean history between two districts of the same city. Fans of contemporary architecture do well here, as do walkers, families and photographers.
Chinatown's jajangmyeon, served in packed dining rooms from noon on, is the essential dish. At Wolmido, grilled seafood stands and cones of fried shrimp go with the seaside walk.
Keep a comfortable margin: this is one of the most densely populated regions on the planet and distances stretch out. Ship excursions simplify the logistics; more independent travellers will combine shuttle, metro and taxi, and should leave early.
