At Bulgaria's main Danube landing, a few minutes' walk from the centre. Walking is easy and the ground is flat: no transport is needed for the city core.
Freedom Square, Alexandrovska street, the Holy Trinity church and the regional history museum are all walkable in half a day. The Ivanovo excursion takes up whatever time remains.
Because of its neoclassical and Art Nouveau facades adorned with caryatids, worked balconies and verdigris domes. In the nineteenth century the city was the Ottoman Empire's gate on the river, then the most European of Bulgarian cities, first to have the railway, modern printing and foreign consulates.
The Monument of Liberty, raised after independence and now the city's emblem, at the centre of a broad pedestrian esplanade. Around it, the Dohodno Zdanie, an imposing 1902 building topped with statues, rivals the old merchants' mansions for elegance.
A sanctuary partly sunk below ground level, as Ottoman rules required. Behind its modest facade lies a warm interior of icons and gilding, over three centuries old.
Sanctuaries carved into the cliffs of the Rusenski Lom nature park, about twenty kilometres from Ruse and listed by UNESCO. They preserve medieval frescoes of remarkable delicacy, painted in the fourteenth century by masters of the Tarnovo school.
Yes, it lies near Ivanovo and also clings to the rock above the river. Still inhabited, it pairs well with the rock churches in a half-day excursion, among the finest on the lower Danube.
Shopska salad with tomatoes and white cheese, flaky banitsa and Bulgarian yoghurt, known for its distinctive cultures, with red wines from the nearby hills. Cafés on the square also serve traditional boza, a grain drink you either love or never forget.
