Frequently Asked Questions
At Kehl, on the German bank of the Rhine. Strasbourg, in France, is the point of the day: the Passerelle des Deux Rives spans the river, and a discreet line on the ground marks exactly where Germany becomes France.
A flat path follows the Rhine to Kehl station, about 900 metres away. From there tram line D crosses the river and reaches Homme de Fer, in the centre of Strasbourg, in about fifteen minutes.
There are no checks: cyclists and walkers cross the footbridge without ever showing a document. It is still sensible to carry your identification, as anywhere while travelling, but the border is crossed on foot like any bridge.
Notre-Dame cathedral and its astronomical clock, then La Petite France by following the canals westward. The Ponts Couverts and the Vauban dam close the view, and the dam's terrace offers the best vantage point.
A Gothic building whose single spire rises to 142 metres, built in pink Vosges sandstone that seems to shift colour with the hour. The astronomical clock draws the crowds, and the nave sets its own pace between medieval glass and suspended organs.
The former quarter of tanners, millers and fishermen, where half-timbered houses lean out over the water. The open-worked roofs once dried hides. The whole Grande Île has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1988.
The Garden of the Two Banks, a cross-border park with a wooden observation tower, near the quay. The town's shopping street is popular with cross-border shoppers for its bakeries and chemists. It is a complement, not the heart of the call.
The euro on both sides of the river, which simplifies everything. Cards are widely accepted in Strasbourg; on the German side, carry a few notes, since cash remains more common than in France.
Alsatian cooking in the winstubs, those taverns with checked tablecloths: choucroute garnie, tarte flambée, hearty pies, with a Riesling or a Pinot Gris. For something sweet, kouglof, the crown-shaped brioche baked in a glazed earthenware mould.
Yes, more than you might expect. Between the path to the station, the tram and exploring the Grande Île, the day is largely on foot. The return can be by the same tram, or on foot through the Rhine parks for the more energetic.
