On the Ardèche bank, at the foot of the castle. The call then plays out on both banks: Tournon-sur-Rhône on the Ardèche side and Tain-l'Hermitage on the Drôme side, linked by a suspension footbridge that seems strung there for travellers.
The castle and its terraces, the walk across the footbridge, then either the Valrhona Cité du Chocolat or the climb into the Hermitage vines. The last two take about ninety minutes each, so you must choose.
The castle of the counts of Tournon, clinging to its granite rock above the river, blending medieval defences with a Renaissance residence. Its museum traces Rhône navigation history, back when boatmen hauled their craft against the current. The terraces give one of the finest viewpoints in the valley.
The pedestrian bridge linking the two banks in a few minutes of airy walking, named for the Ardèche engineer Marc Seguin, a pioneer of suspension bridges whose first structure crossed the Rhône right here in 1825. Halfway across, everyone stops.
The slope above Tain, where some of the most sought-after wines on the planet are grown in terraces: Syrah reds and Marsanne whites. The harvest is still done by hand, because of the gradient.
Yes, a marked path climbs between the plots to the chapel crowning the hill. Allow a good hour there and back and expect your calves to notice, rewarded by a full panorama over the valley. Chapoutier, Jaboulet and the Cave de Tain offer tastings and tours within walking distance of the quay.
A gourmet museum about fifteen minutes' walk from the footbridge, at the headquarters of Valrhona, chocolatier to leading pastry chefs since 1922: cacao origins, chocolatiers' techniques, sensory workshops and tastings at every stage. Ninety minutes is enough. The shop tests the best intentions.
The Vivarais railway, leaving from Saint-Jean station, which runs into the Doux gorges in vintage carriages, sometimes hauled by a steam locomotive. Allow half a day. Timetables vary by season and seats go fast on steam days: book through the ship.
The euro, and cards are accepted in the cellars, the Cité du Chocolat and restaurants on both banks. Keep cash for small producers.
The Cité du Chocolat, which wins over families, sweet tooths and the merely curious alike. Crossing the footbridge is also a hit with children, and the steam train remains the favourite when the call is long enough.
