At the pontoon, right in the centre of Mâcon on the Saône. The old town opens directly opposite the moorings: no shuttle needed.
Quai Lamartine and its market, Place aux Herbes with its Maison de Bois, then Vieux Saint-Vincent. If timing allows half a day, take the excursion to the Rock of Solutré and the vineyards instead.
It is the most photographed surprise in town: a house from the very start of the 16th century on Place aux Herbes, its carved façade swarming with figures, grimacing monkeys and fantastical creatures.
Vieux Saint-Vincent, the remnant of the former cathedral, of which the narthex and two octagonal towers survive, visible from a distance. It is a fragment, not a complete building: worth knowing before you set off.
The poet was born here. A waymarked route, the « Tracé de la Plume », guides visitors between his birthplace, the houses where he lived and the salons that heard him. No need to have reread « Le Lac »: the circuit takes in the most elegant parts of the old town.

Two food regions facing each other across the river: on the Burgundy side, Mâconnais goat cheeses, warm gougères and local white wines; on the Bresse side, chicken in cream. A crémant as an aperitif, a galette bressane to finish.
Very easy. Everything starts at the quay: the Saint-Laurent bridge, whose arches have spanned the Saône since the Middle Ages, the terraces under the plane trees and the lanes climbing to Place aux Herbes.
