At the very foot of the fortress, or in the small town of Golubac a few kilometres upstream, depending on the itinerary. Either way, the fortress is the single point of the call.
A 14th-century stronghold built on a rocky spur, whose nine towers, 20 to 25 metres tall, climb from the shore to the ridge. It locked the entrance to the Iron Gates gorges, a crossing point between the Hungarian, Serbian and Ottoman worlds.
At least an hour and a half for a full climb, more if you linger over the exhibitions. The visit follows the levels: lower courtyard near the entrance, then a gradual ascent by stairs and laid-out paths.
The effort is real: there are many steps and the slope is steep. Good shoes are enough, but the high walkways do not suit everyone. Each level reveals a bit more of the landscape, which helps.
The immense river on one side - the Danube spreads several kilometres wide here, like a lake between Serbia and Romania - and the dark entrance to the gorges on the other. That contrast is what makes the climb worthwhile.
Yes, and it is already a fine moment. Watching the nine towers grow from the ship's deck remains one of the strongest images of the whole Danube voyage, even without setting foot on land.
The park protecting the longest river gorge in Europe, whose threshold is marked by Golubac Fortress. Downstream the cliffs close in until the Danube runs through spectacular corridors that ships usually transit the same day.
Some itineraries do: the archaeological site lies downstream, where a fishing community thrived more than 8,000 years ago. Its stone sculptures with fish faces are among the oldest in Europe.
For children who can walk, yes: the towers, wall walks and gangways are an adventure playground. With toddlers or a stroller the climb quickly becomes a problem; better to stay in the lower courtyard.
May to October, the sailing season on the lower Danube. Spring and early autumn give the softest light over the gorges and a less punishing climb than high summer.
