Frequently Asked Questions

At the town's small landing stage, steps from the first houses. There is no port bustle: about 2,500 people live here, in the heart of the Iron Gates gorges, where the Danube draws its widest curve.
Because it is held back downstream by the Derdap dam. At this point the river widens until you would mistake it for a lake, and the water is far calmer than it once was.
Because building the Derdap dam raised the water level in the late 1960s. The entire village was rebuilt higher up the bank, which explains the plain facades and regular layout of the town today.
An archaeological site about fifteen minutes away, on a terrace overlooking the Danube: the remains of one of Europe's oldest settled communities, established there between 9500 and 7200 BCE. It is the main reason for the call.
Under a large roof protecting the excavation, walkways let you look down on the trapezoidal house foundations and the stone sculptures with half-human, half-fish faces that made the place famous. A small adjoining museum sets it all in context.
They are among the oldest monumental sculptures on the continent, shaped by people who lived off the river. The site was revealed in the 1960s, just before the water rose, then moved higher to save it.
Simply walk. The landscaped bank is easily covered on foot, a few cafes line their terraces facing the water, and the local market offers hill honey, plum jam and sometimes homemade rakija.
No, a few hours are enough. The town is small and the Lepenski Vir excursion takes most of the time. It is a quiet stage between two spectacular passages through the gorges.
Reasonably. The riverside walk is flat and safe, and the stone faces at Lepenski Vir intrigue children. That said, there is no attraction and no playground: this is a contemplative call.
The Serbian dinar, preferably in cash. In a town this size cards work poorly outside the archaeological site. Bring small notes for the market and the cafes.
