Frequently Asked Questions

Ships anchor offshore and tenders land passengers at Marina Grande, the small waterfront of ochre and pink facades. This is an anchorage, not a berth: in rough weather landing can be compromised.
By funicular, a four-minute ride, with tickets bought at the landing stage. At peak times the queue lengthens: buses and open-top taxis parked near the quay are the alternative. Early risers avoid most of the crush by going up before 9:30.
Piazza Umberto I, the beating heart of island life, whose tightly packed cafes form the most famous open-air salon in the Mediterranean. You sit there to watch the world go by as much as for the coffee itself.
From the Gardens of Augustus, about fifteen minutes' walk from the Piazzetta along via Vittorio Emanuele, with a modest entrance fee. The terrace opens on one side to Marina Piccola and on the other to the three limestone stacks planted in water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue.
Pick one side. Either Capri: funicular, Piazzetta, Gardens of Augustus, Faraglioni. Or Anacapri and Monte Solaro by chairlift. Both in one day is possible but tight, and the cliff road between the two towns takes time.
The island's second town, higher and quieter: whitewashed lanes, handmade sandal workshops, shaded squares. From there a chairlift lifts visitors to the summit of Monte Solaro, the island's highest point, where the view takes in the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius and, on clear days, the Amalfi Coast.
Only sometimes, and this needs saying plainly: access depends entirely on sea conditions, and the wait can be long in summer. You enter aboard small rowed boats for a brief but striking visit. The Green and White grottoes, less busy, are fine consolations.
By boat tours leaving from the landing stage, which run along sea caves, coves and cliffs, pass under the natural arch of the Faraglioni and reveal corners invisible from land.
The euro and Italian, with English widely spoken: the island lives on international visitors. Cards work everywhere; keep cash for the funicular, the Blue Grotto rowboats and kiosks.
It is a vertical island, and you should know it. Staircases, sloping lanes, constant climbs. The funicular and chairlift spare you the worst, but the Gardens of Augustus and the Anacapri lanes require working legs.
