Frequently Asked Questions

Along the Danube quays, only a few hundred metres from the first lanes. No shuttle is needed: down the gangway, a short walk beside the river, and you stand before the fortified gate of the stone bridge.
A medieval sixteen-arch structure built between 1135 and 1146, spanning the Danube for nearly nine centuries. It greets travellers on the approach, backed by a forest of steeples, patrician towers and ochre roofs.
The stone bridge and its gate five minutes from the quay, St Peter Cathedral at ten minutes, the Roman Porta Praetoria, then the old Rathaus and its Diet hall. Thurn und Taxis palace is a twenty-minute walk.
Because, spared by the bombing, it offers one of the best preserved medieval ensembles in Europe. The World Heritage listing dates from 2006 and includes the Stadtamhof suburb.
A Roman gate from the year 179, a remnant of the legionary camp Castra Regina founded under Marcus Aurelius. Its massive blocks are now embedded in the walls of a lane near the cathedral.
Its two openwork spires serve as a landmark from anywhere, and its medieval stained glass bathes the nave in deep light. Admission is free. The boys choir attached to the cathedral is among the oldest in the world.
The town hall where the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire sat from 1663 to 1806. It is visited with its imperial hall and dungeons, about twelve minutes from the quay.
A tiny smoke-filled white house by the river that has fed passers-by grilled sausages for centuries: it is said to have fed the builders of the sixteen arches. Sweet mustard and sauerkraut, on a terrace facing the water.
Because medieval trade with Venice and the East enriched the merchant families, who competed by raising Italian-style residential towers. The Golden Tower and its neighbours still cut the distinctive skyline.
The euro. Cards work at museums and restaurants, but keep cash for the Wurstkuchl, the Stadtamhof cafés and the small shops in the lanes.
