On the right bank of the Rhine, the German side, at the foot of this small Baden town. Breisach serves as the base for ships working the Upper Rhine between Basel and Strasbourg.
Plainly put: most disembark to head straight out on excursion. Colmar and its flowered canals are about 25 kilometres away on the French side, Freiburg im Breisgau some thirty minutes away on the German side, and coaches also run to the deep-roofed farms and clockmaking workshops of the Black Forest. But Breisach itself deserves more than a glance through the window.
Yes. The station is about fifteen minutes' walk from the quay and regular trains run to Freiburg im Breisgau. It is the option for anyone who prefers going it alone to an organised excursion.
The Münsterberg, the hill that the cobbled lanes climb in about fifteen minutes from the quay. It carries St Stephen's Minster, part Romanesque and part Gothic, whose interior holds a carved wooden altarpiece of startling delicacy and early frescoes. On the way up, fortified gates, ramparts and pastel facades recall that this position was fought over for centuries.
Two countries in a single glance: the French Vosges on one side, the first heights of the Black Forest on the other, and between them the Rhine tracing the border. In clear weather the church towers of Alsace stand out across the plain. This cross-border panorama alone justifies the climb.
A star-shaped citadel designed by Vauban in the late 17th century on the French side, so perfectly geometric it looks drawn with a compass. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list with the other major fortifications by Louis XIV's engineer, it takes an hour or two to visit. Some excursions include it; independently, a taxi crosses the river in a few minutes.
A former volcanic massif covered in vine terraces north of the town, known as one of the warmest corners of Germany. Pinot gris and pinot noir reach ripeness levels here that are rare in Riesling country.
Taste the local wine facing the river while everyone else rides to Colmar. Regional cellars, including a major cooperative based in Breisach itself, offer tastings and bottles to take home. Exploring the Münsterberg, the ramparts and the old town on foot fills two unhurried hours.
The euro on both sides, since Germany and France share the currency. The language changes, though: German in Breisach, French in Colmar and Neuf-Brisach. Bring cash, as small cellars and border taxis do not all take cards.
Three approaches work. The classic excursion: Colmar, Freiburg or the Black Forest by coach. The walking option: Münsterberg, ramparts and old town in two unhurried hours. Or the combination: an early climb to the minster, then Neuf-Brisach or a tasting in the afternoon.
