Frequently Asked Questions
Right at the foot of the houses in Caudebec-en-Caux: you walk down the gangway and you are there. The bank is lined with pale houses and tidy gardens, beneath the elegant Brotonne bridge that spans the valley in a single sweep.
Because the town merged with its neighbours in 2016 under that new name. Caudebec-en-Caux remains the village where boats dock, in the heart of the Pays de Caux, in one of the widest bends of the Norman Seine.
Yes, effortlessly. The streets rise gently to the church, five minutes from the quays, and the whole centre is walkable. Only the abbeys require a coach or taxi.
The abbey route, which is the real reason to stop here. Saint-Wandrille and Jumièges combine easily in a single half day, a few kilometres from the quay. If you stay in the village, the Notre-Dame church and MuséoSeine fill two or three hours nicely.
Its scale, surprising for a village this size. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, it displays a facade of stone lace, hundreds of carved statuettes and old stained glass. Henri IV is said to have called it the finest chapel in the kingdom. Do not miss the pendant vault keystones in the Sacred Heart chapel.
Saint-Wandrille, founded in the 7th century, is a living monastery: a Benedictine community still lives there, with a cloister, classical buildings and a monastic shop selling beer brewed on site. Jumièges is in ruins, and that is what makes it moving: the roofless abbey church raises its two white towers above the trees.
A museum on the quays tracing life on the Norman Seine: navigation, pilots, floods, and the mascaret, the vanished tidal bore that once ran up the river and drew crowds by the thousand. Traditional boats, models and first-hand accounts make up an hour-long visit.
One of the oldest dwellings in Normandy, with 13th-century walls. It survived the fire that destroyed the village in 1940, which explains how few old buildings surround it. It recalls that Caudebec was long a prosperous river trading town.
The euro and French. Cards work in shops and restaurants. Some cash remains useful at the market and at the Saint-Wandrille monastic shop.
Cider and calvados from the nearby orchards, often offered at farm tastings during excursions, and Norman cheeses, camembert and neufchâtel above all, on the market stalls. A terrace facing the water rounds out the day.
