Frequently Asked Questions
At a plain stone quay where the Douro meets the Águeda, on the Spanish border. It is the end of navigation for vessels coming up from Porto. No terminal, no shops, barely a few buildings behind the bank.
Very little. No taxi service or regular bus reaches the spot: the ship's organised excursions are the only practical way to go anywhere. Those who stay near the quay get raw scenery of granite gorges, almond and olive trees.
Yes, a detail many forget: Spain runs sixty minutes ahead of neighbouring Portugal. Stepping onto the quay costs you an hour.
To Salamanca, about two hours by road across the Campo Charro plateaux, a steppe scattered with holm oaks where fighting bulls and Iberian pigs graze. The university city is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Plaza Mayor, completed in 1755 and among the most harmonious in Spain, with its three tiers of baroque arcades. The university, founded in 1218, where visitors hunt for the famous carved frog on the plateresque facade. The two adjoining cathedrals, Romanesque Vieja and Gothic Nueva, and the Casa de las Conchas bristling with stone scallop shells.
Because of Villamayor stone, a blond sandstone that catches fire at sunset. That material gives the whole city its distinctive colour, above all late in the day.
Guijuelo Iberian ham, produced a few kilometres away, and hornazo, a filled pie typical of Salamanca. Lunch is often included in the excursion, and some programmes add a flamenco show.
The Arribes del Duero natural park on the Spanish side and the Douro Internacional on the Portuguese: a granite canyon where griffon vultures, black storks and Bonelli's eagles nest. The griffon colonies are among the largest on the Iberian peninsula. Binoculars make a riverside walk far more rewarding.
Yes, some itineraries offer Castelo Rodrigo, a Portuguese citadel perched above the valleys, halfway between the river and the border. It is a half day rather than a full one, and it spares you the two-hour drive into Castile.
Early and late season. The scenery of gorges, almond trees and terraced vines is at its gentlest in spring and autumn; the Castilian summer floods the meseta with light and heat, which makes the road to Salamanca harder going.
