At a landing right beside the houses. No terminal, no queue: you step onto the quay and Pinhão is there, a few tight streets between the river and the slopes.
The whole village takes about twenty minutes to walk. The azulejo railway station is five minutes from the quay and Quinta do Bomfim is within walking distance. The other quintas and the Casal de Loivos viewpoint need a vehicle.
For its azulejo panels, known throughout Portugal. These blue and white tiles depict old harvests, grape baskets carried on men's backs, and the valley's landscapes. Visitors linger longer than they planned.
The great port houses have estates around the village: Quinta do Bomfim, owned by the Symington family, within walking distance of the quay; Quinta da Roêda, tied to the Croft house; Quinta das Carvalhas, whose vines climb the opposite bank; Quinta de la Rosa, between river and hillside.
You follow the grape's path, from terraces to presses, before the tasting: often a dry white first, then an amber tawny with notes of walnut and candied fruit. Tasting rooms usually overlook the river bend, so the glass comes with the very landscape that produced it.
The Casal de Loivos belvedere above the village, reached by coach on several excursions. From up there the river unrolls its bend between the terraces, and centuries of human labour fit into a single glance.
A plateau above the valley, where a muscat grape yields a well-known sweet wine. The town has an engaging bread and wine museum, and some visits include a baker whose loaves still bake in a wood-fired oven. Cool moscatel with warm bread is the valley's surest culinary memory.
September and October. The slopes fill with pickers, trailers of grapes come down to the wineries and, at some quintas, foot treading still takes place in granite lagares. Autumn passengers sometimes witness scenes the rest of wine-growing Europe has largely abandoned.
The euro and Portuguese. Quintas and village shops take cards and work in English with groups. A little cash makes purchases from small producers easier.
Only moderately. The program revolves around wine, which says little to children, and cellar tours run long for them. The azulejo station, the moored rabelos and the Casal de Loivos panorama redeem part of the day.
