Some places measure time in centuries; Bar measures it in millennia. A few kilometres from the terminal where ships dock, an olive tree more than two thousand years old still spreads its branches, and the ruins of a medieval city keep watch over the plain from their rocky spur. Montenegro's main sea gateway, set against the foothills of Mount Rumija, hides its true character well behind the look of a modern town with broad avenues.

From the Dock to the Royal Palace

A shuttle connects the terminal to the town centre in barely five minutes. Facing the sea, in the middle of a park planted with Mediterranean species, stands the palace of King Nikola, built in 1885 for the country's last monarch. Its peach-coloured façades now house the municipal museum, and the waterfront promenade running alongside it leads straight to the main beach. In the evening, locals gather here for the šetnja, the leisurely stroll that serves as a ritual across the Balkans. The garden surrounding the royal residence brings together plants brought back from afar by sea captains of old; visitors can wander freely among pines, citrus trees and southern species, just steps from the waterfront terraces.

Stara Maslina, the Patriarch Tree

About 4.5 km from the waterfront, a stone enclosure protects the Stara Maslina, considered one of the oldest olive trees in the world. Its gnarled, split and scarred trunk is more than two thousand years old: this tree was already bearing olives before the Roman Empire. A short taxi ride is all it takes to reach it, and the visit pairs naturally with what follows, since the olive groves surrounding it climb gently toward the old abandoned city.

Stari Bar, the Upper Town

5 km from the shore, at the foot of the mountains, Stari Bar lines its ruins along a rocky outcrop: ramparts, collapsed churches, Ottoman-era houses and an aqueduct that still spans the nearby ravine. Founded in antiquity and fortified in the Middle Ages, the city was abandoned following the wars and earthquakes of the 19th century. Today, visitors wander its open-air streets like a book carved in stone, with explanatory panels along the way and no soundtrack but the bells of the goats grazing nearby, before heading back down through the old town, where a few taverns serve mountain cheeses, olives and Turkish coffee beneath the vine-covered terraces.

Between Sea and Mountain

The region has always lived off its olive groves: the hills rising toward Mount Rumija hold tens of thousands of trees, and the local oil shows up on every table. On the shore side, the long pebble beach at Šušanj extends the waterfront to the north, popular mainly with local families. You can shape your port call however you like: history in the morning in the upper town, a swim or a drink facing the Adriatic on the way back, all without ever straying more than a handful of kilometres from the ship.
